| The series of Burnout games began with the release of Burnout in 2001, which spawned a 2002 sequel entitled Burnout 2: Point of Impact. Although both Burnout games received high critical praise and success in Europe, they never found a fanbase in America. It wasn't until the release of Burnout 3: Takedown that the franchise really exploded in popularity and Americans finally took to the series that was so popular in Europe. Part of the reason for this could be attributed to EA Games. The first two Burnout games were developed by Criterion Games, but published by Acclaim. Once EA Games released Burnout 3: Takedown for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, many casual gamers became aware of the series and fell in love with the aggressive driving experience that it offered. The Burnout series involves racing down traffic-filled roads and gives players a very high sense of speed, not unlike other driving sims. What makes the Burnout series unique, though, is that the games actually encourage players to interact with the other drivers on the road. Knocking one of your opponents into incoming traffic and causing him to crash is referred to as a "takedown" in Burnout 3, and players are rewarded with increased speed and points each time they perform this maneuver. In September 2005, EA Games released the next entry in the Burnout franchise, entitled Burnout Revenge. This game built upon the improvements seen in Burnout 3: Takedown, and offers players even more ways to battle on busy streets and highways. Gamers who own portable systems also have the chance to play Burnout while they're on the road, as Burnout Legends was also created for the PSP and Nintendo DS. |
