Bluetooth technology is one of the most commonly mentioned features on newer model cell phones. Bluetooth has revolutionized the way we think about our communications devices, but many people still have no idea what this strangely named technology does. Simply put, Bluetooth allows cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs, laptops, and other mobile devices to communicate by using short-range radio waves. This eliminates the need for bulky connecting cables.

Contrary to popular belief, the Bluetooth name does not refer to the mechanical details of this innovative technology. Bluetooth is named in honor of the impact Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and other countries from the Baltic region have had on the communications industry. Harald Bluetooth was a former king of Denmark.

Bluetooth technology works by communicating on a 2.45 gigahertz frequency. This is the same radio frequency band used by garage door openers, baby monitors, and most newer types of cordless phones, so Bluetooth developers took great care to ensure that devices with this technology wouldn't experience any interference. Even when you have several Bluetooth enabled devices in the same room, spread-spectrum frequency hopping and low power signals ensure that all of the equipment will operate correctly. Bluetooth has teamed up with a number of companies, such as Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, and Toshiba, which work with Bluetooth for the continued development and promotion of Bluetooth wireless technology. Motorola, Nokia, and Sony Ericsson and others manufacture Bluetooth headsets, ready to work with the majority of new cell phones currently on the market.

Bluetooth has three distinct advantages. As a wireless technology, it is more appropriate for the needs of frequent travelers who don't want to carry around a briefcase full of computer cables. Bluetooth is also easy to use; your devices will connect automatically without any user input. Finally, devices such as Bluetooth adapters, a Bluetooth car kit, and a Bluetooth headset are relatively inexpensive.
