| Battlefield 1942 was the first entry in the series of Battlefield PC games developed by Digital Illusions CE and released by Electronic Arts. Unlike many other first-person shooters, the Battlefield series relies heavily on large maps, vehicle warfare, and multiplayer action. These games have become quite popular for their intense war simulation, and have spawned a number of expansion packs, sequels, and independently-produced mods. Soon after the release and subsequent success of the original Battlefield 1942, the expansion packs The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of World War II were released. One of the most popular mods produced was entitled Desert Combat, which moved warfare to the Middle East. Although these mods were not developed with permission from Digital Illusions CE or Electronic Arts, they have certainly contributed to the longevity and success of the Battlefield franchise. This success also made the sequel to Battlefield 1942 inevitable. In March of 2004, Electronic Arts once again published a Digital Illusions CE developed Battlefield game, this time subtitled Vietnam. In Battlefield Vietnam, gamers could fight virtually in Vietnam using period-specific weapons. Popular music of the day was also included for authenticity, and would play when inside one of the game's many vehicles. Another entry in the Battlefield franchise was released in June of 2005, entitled simply Battlefield 2. Unlike the other games in the series which took place during wars of the past, Battlefield 2 occurs during a fictional war in the future. This entry in the Battlefield franchise was only released for the PC, with the console version having a later release date. |
