Batteries for laptops come in
different types, weights and energy capacities; however, the
choice is not really yours to make. If you are looking for a
battery for a laptop you already own, you are largely limited to
batteries that are manufactured for your system. However, if you
are in the market for a laptop, you have a greater ability to
choose what kind of battery will work for you.
If you are on
the road a lot and away from a power source, yet need to run
multiple applications, it's important that you find a system
that can give you the charge you need without running down right
away. You may have to compromise on the size and weight of your
laptop to find one that holds a bigger, stronger battery.
Price will also be an issue. Lithium ion batteries are both
light and high-energy, but they are pricier than nickel cadmium
and nickel metal hydride batteries, which are heavier and have
less energy capacity. Of course, you can always carry an extra
battery or two if you really cannot plug in and recharge
anywhere, but this can become cumbersome if you are carrying
your unit everywhere by hand.
To maximize the charge of your battery, close any and every
application you are not using when you are not plugged in. Avoid
sites with dense graphics and sound, or choose "skip intro" if
you are online and visiting such a site. The good news is that
battery power is becoming more efficient every year by about 10
percent.
