A quad is an ATV that just happens to have four wheels, as opposed to two or three. This type of ATV is also commonly called a 4-wheeler. Two popular ATV manufacturers are Honda and Polaris. In 1970, Honda was the first manufacturer to start selling ATVs in the United States. They were initially only marketed as recreational vehicles, but Americans soon discovered the advantages of using them on their farms, ranches, and basically on any land that was inaccessible by pickup truck. However, the four-wheel Honda ATV did not arrive on the scene until 1984. The first Honda ATV with four wheels was the TRX200. The quads were an instant hit and today remain one of Honda's best-selling ATVs. In 1986, Honda made history again with the release of the Four Trax 350, the first ATV with four-wheel drive.
Polaris, which is best known for its snowmobiles, started making ATVs in 1985. Today the Polaris ATV is considered one of the toughest on the market and its Predator 500 was even named Sports Quad of the Year in 2003 and 2005 by ATV Sport Magazine. The magazine says the reason they chose the 2005 Predator 500 is because of its potential for competition and accessibility to the average or recreational rider.
It's projected that 875,000 ATVs will be sold in the U.S. in 2005. You should expect to pay around $7,000 for a brand-new quad ATV. However, if you shop around you can find a used ATV for under $2,000.
