This here is my list of must-have hiphop/rap albums. A majority of these albums are from the early 1990's, when hiphop was real. At that time there was a lot of competition between eastcoast and westcoast artists, resulting in number of excellent, now known as, classic albums.
Best Westcoast (In no particular order)
1) All Eyez on Me Considered Tupac's best album, but i'd have to say it's second to Me Against Tha World. Incredible lyrics as usual from Tupac. Best Songs - I Ain't Mad At Cha, Only God Can Judge Me, Ratha Be Ya N*gga, Run Tha Streetz, No More Pain, Life Goes On, All About U, My Ambitionz Az A Ridah, everything else is at least 9/10.
2) The Chronic Dr. Dre's best album ever. The cd that got DeathRow Records started and put on tha map; it introduced Snoop Doggy Dogg. Dr. Dre, Snoop, and all of DeathRow at its finest. Best Songs - Dre Day, Ain't Nuthin' But A G Thang, Little Ghetto Boy, Let Me Ride, everything else at least 8.5/10.
3)Doggystyle No doubt Snoop's best album ever, even he couldn't top it. The most anticipated hiphop album ever, which lived up to its expectations with Snoop at his prime. It's mixed with awesome G-funk beats and clever comedic lyrics. Best Songs - Murder Was Tha Case, Ain't No Fun (If Tha Homies Can't Have None), Gin 'N' Juice, What's My Name?, everything else 9/10.
4) 2Pac - Greatest Hits A compilation of Tupac's best work, although it is missing a few songs. Best Songs - All.
5) Me Against the World Me Against Tha World. Tupac's best album. No question about it, Tupac was at tha peak of his career with this album. It's filled with raw emotion, beats, lyrics, everything. Best Songs - Me Against Tha World, So Many Tears, Dear Mama, It Ain't Easy, Temptations, Lord Knows, Outlaw, everything else 9.5/10.
6) The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory The 7 Day Theory. Tupac's first posthumous album, although it was produced while Tupac was alive, just wasn't released. This is a good cd to just sit back and chill to, tha beats are tha type to lay back to. Best Songs - Krazy (incredible song), Just Like Daddy, Bomb First (Second Reply), To Live and Die In L.A., Blasphemy, Life of An Outlaw, Hail Mary, Hold Ya Head, everything else 9/10.
7) 2001 Dre's follow up album to the Chronic... not as good, but still enjoyable. Best Songs - Still Dre, The Next Episode, Explosive, What's The Difference.
8) Straight Outta Compton The guys that started it all... the Godfather's of gangsta rap. Their best album. Best Songs - Straight Outta Compton, Express Yourself, F*ck Tha Police.
9) Regulate...G Funk Era Warren G's debut album was pretty damn good. Filled with awesome g-funk beats. Best Song - Regulate
10) Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. Tupac's sophomore solo album. Exceptional social/political lyrics. Best Songs - Keep Ya Head Up, I Get Around, Papa'z Song, Holler If Ya Hear Me.
Best Eastcoast (In no particular order, except for number 1)
1) Illmatic Nas' debut album... just amazing. This album was awesome! I love it, it's so good. The beats, lyrics, and guest appearance are all perfect. Excellent album, especially to just sit back and chill to. It's incredible for a 9 track album... short and sweet. Quality over quantity baby. Best Songs - One Love, World Is Yours, Represent, Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park), Life's A B*tch, N.Y. State of Mind, everything else 9.8/10.
2) <Product Not Available: B0000039PW> Biggie's debut surprised me. Production, lyrics, style, guest appearances, all exceptionally well done with a lot of help from Biggie's incredible story-telling abilities. Best Songs - Everyday Struggle, Me and My B*tch, The What, Gimme Tha Loot, Juicy, Unbelievable, Suicidal Thoughts, Warning.
3) Reasonable Doubt Jay-Z's best album, no question. This was when he was real, had meaningfl, conscious lyrics... basically he wasn't mainstream. Best Songs- Dead Presidents II, Regrets, Politics As Usual, Can I Live.
4) Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) The Wu's debut cd, and arguably their best. Best Songs - C.R.E.A.M. , Method Man, Protect Ya Neck.
5) Thug Life: Vol. 1 I'm not too sure if this would be classified as an eastcoast album, but oh well. This short 10 song album reminds me of Illmatic. Short and sweet. Every song is amazing, and Tupac, Rated R, Macadoshis and Big Syke all hold it down on this powerful album. Don't let tha low number of tracks steer you away from this album, remember, quality over quantity. Best Songs - Bury Me A G, Pour Out A Little Liquor, From The Cradle To The Grave, Stay True, Still Ballin'... basically all of them.
6) Infamy Mobb Deep's Infamy. I'm not that big of a Mobb Deep fan... actually i'm not a fan at all. However I must give this album it's credit. Best Songs - Hey Luv (Anything), Learning (Burn), I Won't Fall.
7) Life After Death Biggie's follow-up album to Ready to Die. Not as good as his debut, but still notable. In this album Biggie goes more mainstream, leaving behind tha raw, hardcore sound he had in Ready to Die. Best Songs - Sky's Tha Limit, Hypnotize, 10 Crack Commandments, Going Back To Cali.
8) Against All Odds Tragedy Khadafi is sooooo underrated! He is honestly one of the best rappers I've ever heard. His conscious lyrics, good flows and production buddies make all his albums classics. He has a style that just feels so real and laid back. He's not a mainstream rapper, he doesn't get airplay on MTV or tha radio, but maybe that's a good thing... wouldn't want him to turn mainstream like all those G UNIT fags (excluding The Game). Anyways, get this cd you will NOT be sorry. Best Songs- They Forced My Hand, everything else 9.7/10. Also, check out his new album Still Reportin' |
