Get these albums to get the greatest, no one should ever argue their greatness or their importance. This list is also in no particular order... but my #1 pick is there for a reason. The others that follow are not necessarily better than others listed. They are all amazing.

1. Illmatic Nas's "Illmatic" in my opinion and most other hip hoppers opinion will never ever be touched as far as a hip hop album is concerned. Although Nas has always continued to be one of the greatest MC's of all time, his later works as a whole don't come close to the rawness and brilliance of "Illmatic". Every single song on this album is perfect. This is a must.

2. Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde The Pharcyde's first album will always be close to me. This was the first group to really pour their heart out and say whatever it was regardless of what was the norm. The beats are amazing and each song just bumps. You can't deny whenever "Passing Me By" comes on, your head immediately bops up and down.

3. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm A Tribe Called Quest is no doubt a favorite among everyone who love their "non-pop" hip hop. Each of their albums are genuine and amazing. I've listened to them for so long and I will say that after careful debate, I felt that "People's Instinctive Travels..." is my personal favorite, but only by an inch in front of...

4. The Low End Theory "The Low End Theory" - I remember first listening to this and thinking, wow, this is just perfect. Just buy this album. Like now... go buy it now.

5. De La Soul Is Dead De La Soul's "De La Soul Is Dead" is another powerful record. De La get's a lot of props for "3 Feet High and Rising" which is well deserved, but I think this album is their best. The only thing that may be annoying to some is the amount of skits in between these classic hits. De La deserves way more credit in current hip hop than what they are getting now. The hook on "Oodles of O's" is just sick. Buy this one like, right now too.

6. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" This album is pure gold. The message is clear and the music is hard and heavy. After you listen to this, you'll realize how crappy main stream music (and rap) is nowadays. Everything about this album is real and you know that Chuck D and Flav will never censor themselves just to sell more. So much respect. Buy this album.

7. Black on Both Sides Mos Def is in my opinion, the best MC behind Nas. This album is an awesome buy.

8. Mos Def The Dangerous Mix (MIXTAPE) His remix tape is my personal favorite Mos Def release. The special guests are awesome and his style is vivid. Great party album.

9. Straight Outta Compton So their subject matter may be offensive to a lot of people... but just look at their name. These guys are just as important as Public Enemy as far as raising a message and telling the masses what really happens. Also anyone knows these are the guys that started the "Gangsta" craze.

10. The Score "The Score" I remember when this first came out in '96. It just blew up like I've never seen. To this day, it still holds up and almost touches "Illmatic". This is a definate must have album.

11. The Chronic "The Chronic" took what NWA started and Dr. Dre continued it's legacy onto his own album. As "Gangsta" as this is, there are messages and stories that are told in here that paint a grim picture of how hard life is, and how they maintain. Classic all the way. The production value was like none other at it's time and really pushed the envelope when it came to producing since Rick Rubin helmed Run DMC.

12. Doggystyle Almost perfect album. "Doggystyle" again continued the "Gangsta" themes but the hook was the funk and style of Snoop Dogg.

13. Illadelph Halflife "Illadelph Halflife" opened my eyes the talent level of these members. Musically, lyrically, and emotionally they rock it everytime.

14. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" is another classic debut album. Nothing like this was around at the time.It was fresh, raw, and captured vivid storytelling in front of just sick beats. Wu Tang fans are to hip hop as Slayer fans are to Metal. Their later albums are superb as well, but will never come close to the completeness of this debut.

15. All Eyez on Me "All Eyez On Me" is Tupac's milestone. Everyone can argue that he is the best MC of all time. As a complete career, he certainly is. His voice and fluidness will be one of a kind. Personally, I think Nas took everyone out from past to presnt to future with "Illmatic"... but his consistency never stayed like Tupac's. Which makes Tupac the greatest MC of all time. And for the record... Biggie Smalls never was able to come close to Tupac.

16. Black Star "Black Star" features the unforgetable collaboration of the great Mos Def and Talib Kweli. While on their own, they made some seriously great albums, this collaboration was the best of both worlds and stands as one of the greats of all time. Must own this.

17. Return of the Boom Bap "Return Of The Boom Bap" I chose from KRS-One's collection only cause it was the first KRS-One album I heard. His other albums are just amazing. He in my opinion was the greatest MC before Nas and Tupac came along, and could mpr the floor with %99 percent of rappers out there. This album to me represents his whole collection which are too many to list here. I will say, any KRS record you get will be more than worth the money you drop down for it.

18. Black Sunday "Black Sunday" is Cypress Hill's greatest Hits collection. The only thing missing from this album to make it a true greatest hits album is "How I Could Just Kill A Man" and "Hand On The Pump" Their Live show is sick as well.

19. The Eminem Show "The Eminem Show" Finally, we can take him seriously %100. He seemd another wannabe act with his debut, only difference is Dr. Dre was behind him. Then the "Marchall Mathers LP" came out, he started to develope and mature, but wasn't %100 convincing. Finally, with his 3rd album, he is the real deal, with no "Slim Shady" act to hide behind. His voice is real and everything came together to set him on top of the world and place himself as one of the greatest rappers of all time.

20. The College Dropout "College Dropout" Is the best hip hop album to come out in the last 5 to 6 years in my opinion. Kanye West feels and raps like a rat trapped in the corner, and using this record as his last chance to make it and survive. It certianly shows. Now that he's made it bigger than most, his second record is just flat, and doesn't have the sense of pain, loss, and hope that "College Dropout" had. He's an awesome producer for sure, and his rapping I think is just as good. Get this album not "Late Registration".
