Finding Washing Machines

When shopping for washing machines, you'll be confronted by various brand choices. The basic low-down on brands is as follows: The largest appliance manufacturers are GE and Whirlpool. GE also manufactures the Hotpoint and RCA lines. Whirlpool manufactures the Kitchen Aid line, the Roper line, and many of Sears, Kenmore models. Maytag is well known for its washers and dryers, has a favorable reputation, and as a result, commands a slightly higher price than other brands. For front-loading machines, look to Frigidaire, Kenmore, Maytag, and Asko. And finally, before making your final choice, be sure to find out how your unit will be serviced. Is there a local company who can handle your needs? A sophisticated top-end model is great, but can pose a real problem if no one in your area can fix it.

Compact washers are usually about 24 inches wide, instead of the approximately 27 inches used by conventional washers. Typically these machines can handle about 8 pounds of laundry. Some are permanently installed, while some may be rolled to the sink and connected to the water supply. These machines are a great option for small apartments and small families. Portable machines make sense if there is no available washer hook-up or space for installing one. For additional space savings some front-loading compacts can be stacked with compact dryers.

What to consider when you are choosing a washing machine?

The spinning: The more effective the spinning is, the more quickly your washing will dry. The higher the speed the model offers, the more efficient the spinning is. If you already have a tumble dryer, a washing machine with a drying speed of 800-1000 rpm (revolutions per minute) can be appropriate. If not choose one with a drying speed of at least 1000 rpm.

Fixed drying: You can find Fixed drying system on the most economic models. In this case the spinning operates only at fixed speed whatever the program selected. Some washing machines combine several speeds of fixed drying which adapt according to the selected program.

Variable drying: Variable drying enables you to alter speed of the drum as you wish. You choose the appropriate spinning level to suit your needs and the material being washed. This function is primarily intended to protect delicate materials, which could be damaged by drying too fast.
