Comforters Buying Guide

About Comforters

ComfortersA comforter is a type of blanket. Comforters are intended to keep the user warm, especially during sleep, although they can also be used as mattress pads. Comforters are generally large and rectangular in shape, filled with natural or synthetic insulative material and encased in a shell/covering. Like quilts, comforters are generally used with a set of sheets.

You can't judge a down comforter by its weight. Quality is what matters not quantity and the right comforter can keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You may have to invest a little more, but it will pay off in the long run.

Comforter sizes correspond with bed sizes: twin, full, queen, king, and cal-king. Comforter sizes run slightly larger than actual bed sizes to allow for draping over the sides of the bed. Typical sizes in the United States for comforters are:

  • Twin = 64" Width x 87" Length
  • Queen / Full = 87" Width x 87" Length
  • King = 101" Width x 90" Length.

A comforter is sometimes covered with a duvet (comforter) cover for protection and prolonged use. Duvet is French for "Down". Comforter covers are similar in principle to pillowcases, usually closed with zippers or buttons. Comforters are typically packaged in a set that also includes a bed skirt, pillow shams, and sometimes pillows

Comforter Care

Covers: If you use a duvet cover, you will only have to wash your down comforter every one to three years. That is why a duvet cover is essential. They're easy to remove and wash in the comfort of your home. A duvet cover will protect your down comforter from soiling and will extend its life. Down products should be stored loosely in a breathable bag. Extended compression can harm down comforters and featherbeds.

Washing: Down comforters can't be tossed into your washing machine at home for two reasons. Home washing machines are too small, and the agitator in the center will do just that agitate it, which causes stress on the comforter. Bring it to a laundromat with a front load washer, or have a professional launder it for you. It is best to have all down products dry cleaned professionally, but no more than every 3 to 5 years. If it is cleaned too often, the quality of the down will deteriorate. Avoid harsh detergents and excessive heat (not bad advice for any comforter), as they will cause the down to become dry and brittle.

Comforter FAQs

What if I have allergies?

If you are worried about being allergic to comforters, be assured that you are not the only one. Quite a few people have allergies that can crop up by using comforters. The best thing to do is go with a hypoallergenic comforter which is specially treated to remove allergy causing bacteria.

How can I keep feathers from coming out of my down pillow?

This occasionally happens, but it doesn't mean you have cheap down fill in your pillow or featherbed. Sometimes a wayward feather or two will escape through the down and push its way out of the cover. Purchase pillowcases or a featherbed cover with a higher thread count which will contain the down more efficiently.

Can I only use it in the winter?

Down comforters are for year-round use. Down is natural, lightweight and breathable.

How do I keep it fluffy?

Fluff your comforter daily and air it outside a few times a year in non-humid weather for a few hours. Drape it horizontally rather than vertically or on a clothesline. You can also throw it into a dryer on low heat along with a couple of tennis balls to fluff it up nicely.

What's the best way to store it?

Use a breathable bag to prevent mildew and avoid plastic ones that trap moisture and do not offer any breathability for the comforter.

How come my new comforter isn't that fluffy?

It takes approximately 72 hours to achieve maximum loft, which is why down comforters always look better on display than right out of the package. It's not false advertising. Just take your new comforter out of the packaging, place it on your bed and watch it grow!
