Ohio University is a public university located in Athens, Ohio that is situated on a 1,800 acre (7.3 km²) campus. Founded in 1804, it is the oldest college in Ohio and the first in the Northwest Territory. Ohio University was named by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/High Research Activity institution to reflect its growing number of graduate programs. Other public universities in Ohio with this classification are -- Bowling Green University, Kent State University, Miami University, the University of Akron, the University of Toledo and Wright State University. University libraries contain more than 2.4 million bound volumes.
