Product Reviews (5 stars) - Great Product I have had the ooma Telo for about a month. It is very reliable and the calls are very clear. The support service is quick and efficient. Ooma did not have a local number for my calling area when I first installed, but they found me one in a few days. I am very impressed with the product and the service.
(5 stars) - Everything as Promised The Ooma phone system turned out to be everything we expected. Very easy to setup, simple interaction to port our number, and chrystal clear voice quality. I've already recommended to friends who have joined the bandwagon. No problems what so ever (yet?!)
(2 stars) - Bugs, poor build quality and a work in progress... I have been an Oooma hub subscriber for quite some time. My review is basically going to compare the Hub device to the new Telo. That said, I believe the Telo to be a step down at this point in time for Ooma. Let me explain why: When I was using my hub with three scouts, I had no problems with voice quality, or the quality of the device itself. It seemed to be built sturdy and although a bit bulky, it worked very well. I loved the fact that the scouts gave you a second line along with an answering machine in each room. I also had this hooked up to my Verizon land line for use in case of a power outage. I kept my land line for use with my home alarm system as well. I looked at the Telo as an upgrade that would provide better sound and even more services as they become available since it's upgradeable. Although this may be true, right now, what I am experiencing is the opposite. With the Telo, you lose the scouts. Being a premiere customer, I lost out on the scout's service of a second line and voice mail access in several rooms. The cordless headsets that are now being sold are supposed to solve this problem.
The issues I am having with the Telo include the following: pulsating and buzzing noise on the phone line; very loose connection where the ac adapter plugs into the Telo. I also find that although nice looking, the build quality seems cheaper than the hub. Seems to be another product out of China with build quality issues. Now I may have gotten a defective unit, but reading through the Ooma forums, it seems like a problem for many others as well. Without the additional cordless handsets, you will lose the services that the scouts used to offer. So, I ordered four cordless handsets. As I write this, Ooma will only allow you to activate one of them. Something to do with pin codes and customer security. I find the cordless handsets to also have a `cheap, made in China' feel. The handset does not light up when you receive a call while on the phone so you cannot see the caller ID.
Now I am sure that many of these bugs and issues will resolve over time. But as of now, I would go back to my hub unit and wait for Ooma to get their act together. For me, the Telo and the handsets are a step back for Ooma. I used to love their service but Telo has me re-thinking.
(1 stars) - Terrible, terrible product and customer service. Beware of "extra charges." I've been a customer of Ooma for 6 months. The old hardware was clunky but it did the job. I ordered all the new Telo hardware, spent $300, and tried to set it up. After following all of the printed instructions, nothing worked. So I call in. Someone named Hannah explains that none of the printed instructions of applicable to "upgraders," and that I instead have to plug this stuff into my computer directly and go through a series of arcane steps.
She fumbles through these steps and seems barely able to speak. She keeps saying, "Wait, hold on, umm."
I am patient. I continue listening. She then explains that as an upgrading customer, I have to not only pay a $12 "surchange" but also a $75 "re-activation fee." I explain, I will not be paying those fees, because nowhere during my purchase did it say, "Stop -- this product does not cost $300. It actually costs $387 - but we'll suck the difference out later."
She persisted, and so I asked for a manager. After 10 minutes of waiting, she said there were no managers, but she'd be happy to "open a ticket" for me. I said no, I want to speak with a manager. She said, "If you had read the terms and conditions, you would have known about the extra fees." I ignore her and continue asking for a manager.
I called Ooma on a second line -- this time asking for Sales. The sales manager kept me on hold for 30 minutes and said they couldn't do anything for me.
In the end, I am returning everything and canceling my account with Ooma. I am also NOT giving my old equipment to a family member, costing Ooma one more potential customer.
TERRIBLE customer service and hidden fees. Don't listen to "no monthly fees," either. Most of the real Ooma features are only available if you pay $12/mo.
Avoid at all costs.
(5 stars) - Outstanding Setup took a few minutes. The device is exceptional and phone service is outstanding. A++
