(5 stars) - Great DVD & Concert Performance
I've been a Neil Diamond fan for years, and watching this concert DVD was a pleasure to my senses, I especially liked the "welcome home" preamble to the dvd, it was fun watching Neil walk through the old neighborhood, then the build up to the performance that evening, if you are a Neil Diamond fan, I believe you will find this worth it, some of his performances seemed a bit lackluster, he seemed to be "going through the motions" at some points of the show, but on other songs he really belted them out with energy & was really into pleasing the audience.

Hot August Night NYC (which is a hot chart seller,debuting at #2 on Billboard) is the first dvd to capture all the excitement of a Neil Diamond concert from begining to end.It is a dvd that you can watch again and again,as the performances of 27 classics(including 5 future classics) are top notch.

There are songs here that have never been performed before on any of his videos.Including 5 songs from his critically aclaimed last two albums with Rick Rubin."Don't Go There" becomes a jammy Garden clap along "Pretty Amazing Grace" is great live-with thunderous drums and a Latin feel."Hell Yeah" is a standing ovation getting powerhouse anthem."Home Before Dark" is a beautiful intimate performance.And "Man of God" gives the Grarden a nice gospel vibe.Hot August Night NYC also has the video debut of classics "Thank The Lord For The Night Time","Brooklyn Roads","Crunchy Granolla Suite" and "Done Too Soon".

HAN NYC ends with a hot august night performance of "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" that is electric.

But wait...Then there is a short documentary of Neil Diamond taking a train back to his old Brooklyn hood that is an entertaining watch.The line from "Brooklyn Roads"-"All I Saw was Strangers Faces" came to mind throughout.

I saw this same concert in Jacksonville last November and watching this DVD was like seeing it all over again. I have seen Neil Diamond in concert many times and no one puts on a show like him. He is entertaining and his music is still excellent. From what I have seen and know about Neil Diamond, he is such a professional-gives over 100% in whatever he does-in the studio and in concert. This DVD is a prime example of this. Watching this is like having the best seat in the house-on stage with the band. The sound AND video is incredible. Turn your lights off and you will feel like you are live at the concert. I will admit my surround sound system made it even better. 2 1/2 hours of pure Neil-you can't go wrong.

The extra CD is just a bonus of Neil's personal favorites-nice to have but if you are a fan, you already have every song he has done on previous albums. The concert on DVD alone is worth the price. I even bought a second set for a Christmas gift.

The featurette on his return back to his home in Brooklyn was a great insight in Neil as a person. Nice bonus video.
