Walking on a Dream

Product Details

EMPIRE OF THE SUN is the new psychedelic project led by Australians Luke Steele (of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (P'Nau). Exotic, gaudy, and lavish, Empire Of The Sun brings together these two unlikely collaborators from Australian pop, and so began a friendship which Luke describes as "this fireball of electricity".

Walking On A Dream is a bold, visionary and brilliant album, which manages to sound exhilaratingly contemporary, audaciously forward-looking, yet also curiously archaic all at once. From Nick and Luke's collective unconscious arose a rare marriage of rock and electronica, immediacy and depth, futurism and tradition, hi-tech production and creative spontaneity, pop melody and the cinematic.

The duo are preparing to carry through on their audio-visual vision for their band, demonstrated by the video for the first single and title track, filmed in Shanghai and getting massive online attention (done renegade style, it's illegal to film there and at one point they nearly got arrested).

Given the unusual track records of both the band's constituent members - not to mention the jaw-dropping magnificence of their debut album together - it's safe to say, in the words of NME... "world domination quite literally awaits".

Product Reviews

(4 stars) - Great start
I absolutely love the first four tracks of this album, they are brilliant. The rest of the album is perhaps too experimental for me, but it was worth getting, and they may grow on me in time. Empire are original, innovative and definitely out there-just my kind of band.

(4 stars) - Walking on a Dream
Walking on a Dream being Empire Of The Sun's debut album and their 2008 release sounds a lot like early 80's pop music and one could call it either Electropop or Electronica. The vocals of the singer is very distinct and I must say I never heard that kind of vocals before. NME and The Independent both gave this album 4/5 and I agree with this assessment. Songs that stand out are "Walking On a Dream " and "We Are The People". The booklet is quite fun and strange with nice computer graphics and outrageous outfits that Elton John in the 70's would be proud of. All the lyrics are included but not a list of whom plays what on the album. 4/5.

(5 stars) - Almost remined me of Bowie
A group that derives almost with the essence of David Bowie. Makes you feel good and happy. Very strange music, very artsy. A good album.

(5 stars) - Rock on Luke Steele :)
I love this cd!Though they should have put the video version of 'Without You' on the cd.So refreshing to hear something different.
I hope they will be able to top this cd with something even better.

(4 stars) - Fresh electro-rock, dreamy, nostalgic!
Empire of the Sun has among the freshest sounds of any band I've heard in the last few years. While a lot of music (even indie music!) has gotten pretty formulaic, these guys stand on their own. They are definitely rock at the heart, yet the synths mellow them out a lot, but without tipping them over to the electro pop category. Their songs share a dreamy, nostalgic mood that makes me want to daydream and dance at the same time.

The first four songs on the album are amazing. I keep on playing them over and over (ya know, daydreaming and dancing). Maybe their lyrics are too suggestive. I feel like I... don't want to talk... running for the thrill of it... The remaining songs on the album are not so good though - maybe 3/5 stars. Steele's voice is too whiny and raspy for the slow songs; they are a little painful sounding.

What do they sound like? People have mentioned retro - certainly. The instrumentals kinda sound like Tears for Fears, Fleetwood Mac, When in Rome, or even old stuff from the Cure (Seventeen Seconds album). The dreamy/nostalgic mood reminds me of the Cocteau Twins. If they ever made a movie of 80's shows like The Greatest American Hero, I'm sure these guys would be on the soundtrack.

Empire of the Sun debuted with a fresh, high-quality, fun album. I'm really excited to hear more from them. Maybe in 20 years, we'll be comparing new bands to these guys? :)
