Own an Authentic piece of history. This traditional Chinese basket with lid was originally produced in the early to mid 20th Century. It has some refurbishment but is in almost perfect original condition with a fine patina and lots of hand made detailing. The body is constructed from wood and bamboo with a metal hook for carrying. The metal hardware is a replacement part as almost all small fragments of metal were scavenged during Maos Great Leap Forward (1958 1961) to harness the masses for steel production. Some of Chinas countryside is still devastated by deforestation aimed at fueling the thousands of homemade smelting furnaces. Baskets such as this small, lidded example are often called Wedding Baskets and were used as gift boxes. After the wedding they received continued use for simple storage and transport, hold anything from meals to sewing kits. Today these antique baskets make beautiful room accents, invigorating interior design with history and exotic style.
