Product Reviews (5 stars) - Survived the washer and drier There's a guy on here who doubts this thing is durable. I beg to differ: mine just went through the washer and drier and survived with data intact.
(4 stars) - Mega storage in a little drive My first intent for purchasing the Sony Microvault 8gb drive was to transfer files from one computer to another easily, thinking the 8gb is plenty of room. I bought two of these, one for work, one for home.
Usually I uninstall any of the software that comes with a thumbdrive (ie the Sandisk models), but I am glad I did't overlook the Virtual Expander software for this thumb drive. It compact files much more compact then zipping, allowing for this 8gb drive to store up to 20gb of files, compressed. The compression and decompression is quick and simple on a windows machine.
Pros:
*Small, self storing
*Virtual Expander software expands this drive's capacity
Cons:
*The Virtual Expander software only works with windows
*The Virtual Expander software only works with Sony Microvaults
*No way to automatically back up files with the Virtual Expander, it's a manual process
*If only using for the 8gb capacity, a pricey drive compared to others.
(2 stars) - Chap and Mac worthless This product has cheap feel and only works with Mac OS9. No one use OS9 on a Mac. The new Mac's don't even have OS9.....
(5 stars) - Excellent Product ...!!! Just a few words, one of the best usb memory flash in the market. With all the technology that always offers Sony.
(4 stars) - Sandisk it's not, but worth a look I grabbed one of these at a local Staples store on a sale a few weeks back. I'd prefer a Sandisk product honestly, but most flash drives today are pretty standard so it's just the casing or something that might make them different. Sony's here clicks like a pen to retract the drive into virtually any USB and is super roomy for the money. Feels a little cheap (plastic housing just thin and you can feel the spring inside compressing), but it gets the job done at the end of the day.
If you're looking to move around some basic files from home, office, friend's, etc., grab the 2GB or 4GB and save yourself some money. I formatted off the "included file expander software" which I've read isn't worth its salt, however I back up large DVD disc images or just large amounts of media files around to warrant the 8GB. Flash drives do come in handy, however they do eventually "die" (can be a few years with nominal use) so always backup your files to prevent permanent data loss.
