| Ah Feel Like Ahcid! - 24 American Psychedelic Artefacts From The EMI Vaults |
|
Product Details The first compilation of its kind to open up the late Sixties U.S. vaults of EMI labels Capitol, Tower, Imperial, Liberty, etc. Psychedelia is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary since the original Summer Of Love. Many of the tracks on this CD have never been reissued - more so than the previous volumes in this Series, Take My Tip and Insane Times. Psychedelia was borne in the mid-60s on the West Coast and this CD includes several of the movement's pioneers from the San Francisco, Bay Area and LA scenes - namely Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Steve Miller Band and Mad River, plus the maverick talents of Captain Beefheart. Plus the Beach Boys, of course! Kim Fowley was/is a charismatic svengali-likle producer who has recorded a plethora of different artists - but his classic track 'Bubblegum' was later covered by Sonic Youth. Hour Glass evolved into the Allman Brothers! The Balloon Farm's 'A Question Of Temperature' and the Third Bardo's 'I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time' are two of the finest examples of psychedelic garage punk ever recorded.
Product Reviews (5 stars) - Five Stars If you like American psychedelic - anything from Jefferson Airplane and the San Francisco bands to the Velvet Underground or the Stooges - then there is going to be something in this collection you will love. This has it all: acid rock, garage rock, jams and rare glimpses of some familiar acts as well as obscure ones. The Third Bardo's "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" and Mother Tucker's Yellow Duck's "One Ring Jane" alone make this essential. The Qucksilver Messenger Service's "Bears" is simply bizarre, fun in a cartoonish creepy kind of way. I agree that the last track (the title track "Ah Feel Like Ahcid") doesn't really fit in, but it still works. This one is solid all the way through. I wish i could give it more than 5 stars. They really went above and beyond the call of duty on this one.
(4 stars) - Psychedelia, ah what a trip... Buy this if you've got the dough. It is something I would buy 3 of One to never open, the next for when the last one is worn down to ashes.
Dig, if your a collector then do your thing you ultra groovy freaky people with your black lites on out there in la la land...Ain't it grand? I cannot see, do you have the cure? Owsley's last batch and purrple fuzzy waves, I want my ergotamine synthesized!!! Dig that theory. Bring It Back Out Here In 'burbs of Baltimore & surrounding counties, Harford being the best...
(5 stars) - The Ultimate Psychedelic Compilation!!! I have own close to fifty psychedelic compilation CDs, ranging from major releases such as NUGGETS to such obscurities as SLOWLY GROWING INSANE. AH FEEL LIKE ACID may be the best-presented, most discerningly-assembled psych collection on the market, easily out-valuing box sets such as LOVE IS THE SONG WE SING. The essential elements of psychedelia abound: San Francisco jams, garage punk, sunshine pop, Eastern instruments, and tambourines. Sound quality is amazing. When The Third Bardo's "I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time" resurfaced in the early '80s on PEBBLES VOL.3, its main distinction was the "Twilight Zone Theme" intro; this appearance is a revelation, with unleashed dynamics and a fuzz-edged raga rock guitar solo slicing through the air. Though available elsewhere, The Beach Boys' sole collaboration with Charles Manson, "Never Learn Not to Love" fits in perfectly, and The Steve Miller Band's "The Beauty of Time Is That It's Snowing" shows a surprisingly trippy side of the future popster. It's a credit to the compilation that two of the most well-known songs are The Raik's Progress' "Sewer Rat Love Chant" and The Balloon Farm's "A Question Of Temperature." Captain Beefheart's "Ah Feel Like Ahcid" obviously chosen for its title, doesn't really fit in; "Electricity" from SAFE AS MILK would have fit the bill more effectively. Here's the complete song list:
1. Question Of Temperature - Balloon Farm
2. I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time - The Third Bardo

(5 stars) - A Return "Trip"............. Without a doubt, this CD is a "trip" back in time when the haze was purple and the tambourines were green. If you understand what I just wrote, then this CD is without question, one you will embrace.
