Product Details Totika, a Maori word meaning "well balanced," is a wood block stacking game unlike any other. As players pull blocks from the stack, being careful not to let it topple, they ask each other questions that focus on building self-esteem, social skills and coping strategies. As they concentrate on removing the blocks, players tend to relax, allowing them to open up and talk more freely with one another. Playing Totika will encourage people of all ages to set and achieve goals, motivate themselves, identify strong role models and form healthy relationships. Totika includes the Self-Esteem deck of questions but may be played with any card deck made by Open Spaces, LLC. Measures 3.25" x 10.5" x 3.13".
Product Reviews (5 stars) - good for 3-5 graders I use this as part of the counseling lesson with 3-5 graders--they are more willing to open up and share feelings and thoughts when they control the color they pick and then can read the question. It isn't something you'd use weekly but use 1-2 times a month for 15 minutes as part of the counseling lesson.
(5 stars) - Great for Therapists, Counselors and Families I purchased this game to use with children and their parents or siblings during home-based social work services. It is a great tool. It is much like the "Jenga" game in building a tower and removing individual blocks, but it differs in that there are several optional decks of cards with questions that are asked during each person's turn. The card decks can emphasize things like self esteem and social skills. I've used it with one of my families so far and even the adults had fun. Most important was the way family members were learning from each other about their perspectives and experiences. Of course, the fact that I was there to hear their responses helped me to gain more insight about how to help the family or an individual child. Well worth the money to me. It would also be great just to use with your own family. It opens up conversation and creates lots of opportunities for laughter.
(5 stars) - Clinician loves this game I use this game in counseling sessions with adolscents and adults. The game engages them in the process and the cards provide useful questions to help them explore a variety of topics. I bought all the additional sets of cards available and have found the Teen-Adult set to be the most enjoyable. In addition, the questions are not so "therapeutic" that it would exclude families from playing. The Self-Esteem card deck would be a good conversation starter for talking with your children. I highly recommend this product.
(5 stars) - Fun family game gets people talking and sharing! Totika is as much about building healthy self-concepts, relationships and values as it is about building the stack of colorful blocks. It is played like block stacking games where players take turns pulling blocks from the stack and placing them on top while trying not to knock over the stack. This creates suspense and excitement throughout the game. In addition, players pull question cards and ask each other questions on each turn.
All the questions are open-ended, non-threatening and focus on positive topics. Totika is for ages eight and up and some younger players will benefit from a little assistance with a few questions, which provides for wonderful teaching moments. As the game progresses, the stack grows and grows as does the quality of thought players use in responding to questions. When the laughter stops after someone knocks over the stack over, its easy to stack up Totika for another round.
I highly recommend Totika to parents, youth workers, teachers and any one else that is looking for a fun game that promotes self-improvement of young people (and adults!) . Here are a few questions from Totika:
"What qualities do you look for in a role model?" "If you took a hard look at yourself, what might you decide to change?" "What is a strength of yours others might not notice?"
