Product Reviews (4 stars) - Works well with an unexpected benefit I purchased this product to have full duplex skype call into a weekly conference call. We disturb the boss in the next cubicle so we would go to a room with a bad phone but a network connection. The C100S works as advertised even on my Windows 7 computer. The add-on software does not function on anything other than XP but I knew that from previous reviews.
The interesting part I discovered was that this makes an excellent microphone for my laptop. This means that when I am making Camtasia screen trainings, I do not have to wear the cheesy headphones/boom microphone to dictate the instructions. I can just speak into the air and the C100S picks up my voice with great clarity. The speaker makes a better replacement for my laptop speakers too and is portable. Please notice I wrote "better" than a laptop speaker system but it is stereo and not "tinny" like a laptop.
(5 stars) - Great Skype Tool!! This product is extremely useful, especially for conferencing internationaly. We have purchased several for our business and no complaints so far!
(1 stars) - Obsolete Only correctly works with Windows XP - how laughable. Even more absurd is Polycom support's communication regarding this laziness forcing regular users to secretly upload beta versions of Vista drivers to RapidShare in order to help other people try and get this to work. Also, (obviously I guess) echo cancellation only works with Skype. If there ever was a one-trick pony, this is it.
(3 stars) - Not Vista Compatable The Polycom C100S was designed for Windows XP and works well running on the XP operating system. It "may" work with Vista. I got it to work as a speaker and microphone, but not an integrated speakerphone like when it is used with XP. I still have problems with the Polycom USB driver that was loaded when I used Polycom's Beta Vista installation program. None of the advertisements that I found mentioned that it does not work well with Windows Vista.
(3 stars) - Why I no longer use it We are using Skype more and more at work, and I very happy with the headset that I use. But my boss refuses to use a headset so I purchased the C100S speakerphone for him. It worked well, but I now realize it is not the best solution, and we no longer use it.
You can buy a camera (and if necessary an external speaker) for the price of a C100S and it can sit on top of your display freeing up desk space. I was not familiar with how cheap and high quality cameras (and the associated microphone and software) were. And you don't have to use the video, you can make a "sound only" Skype call.
But more importantly, all speaker phones (including C100S) have a feature which cuts off soft sounds and amplifies loud ones. This form of intentional distortion was necessary with the poor phone lines that Ma Bell had but is counterproductive and unnecessary today. For example there is sometimes construction going on outside our offices and with the C100S it comes though as if the jackhammers were right in our building; at other times words spoken very softly can be completely cut off. On a long call these problems become quite noticeable and quite annoying. With the logitech video camera all sounds are passed though, softly or loudly as the case may be, a far more desirable situation.
So for me the C100S was an interesting experiment, but ultimately unsuccessful. Oh, well, live and learn...
