(5 stars) - Best.Album.Ever.
I discovered the Weepies quite by accident. I was downloading songs on iTunes, and found a playlist that had been put togther by the Indigo Girls. One of the songs on the list was 'World Spins Madly On' from the Weepies "Say I Am You" album. All it took was for me to hear that 20 second sound bite, and I knew I was going to L-O-V-E this album.

The Weepies do a fantastic job of conveying a wide range of emotion, and though the songs are all familiar in a way, they by no means seem old-hat or boring. In particular, 'World Spins Madly On' shines. The song expresses a feeling I can only assume everyone has felt at some point- a feeling of being so small and helpless, and that even though you feel as though your whole world has stopped, the world somehow keeps on going.

"Say I Am You" is full of haunting harmonies, clever lyrics, and memorable imagery. A very mellow album.

This is my favorite album ever made. I highly recommend it.

(4 stars) - Just when you think you've heard everything...
Through the years my music tastes have gone all over the place. I had my mind blown by Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple in high school. I frenziedly slaved over English papers to the Eagles and Bob Seger. Going to college I rocked it to the Scorpions and Van Halen. I rediscovered my Southern roots with Travis Tritt and Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. I cried my eyes out and sighed wistfully, lost in the haze of romance, with Norah Jones. Recently I journeyed back to the early '90s angst with Nirvana. Then, one torrent later, that all changed...

I was introduced to the music of The Weepies, a husband-wife team of musicians, through the magic of the freely available (and legal!) South by Southwest music and film festival's BitTorrent feed of artists who played at the festival. SXSW is huge -- the last few years' worth of torrents take up an astonishing 14 GB on my hard drive. One of the songs out of the roughly 4,000 that make up the collection was "World Spins Madly On," a beautiful romp by this group. My computer crashed before I could get around to buying this album, so I held off, and eventually it went out of mind.

For all of five minutes.

Friendly is the first word that comes to mind when I think of "Say I Am You." The album is generally jovial, even if it's "Not Your Year." And you might not be terribly fond of "Painting[s] by Chagall," but you have to admit -- the artist's work was quite unique. What strikes me as so friendly about this album is how easy the music is to listen to. I program computers a lot, and I find this music excellent for the intense mental labour of programming. Not for lack of complexity, mind you -- while the music is simple, I think this is mostly because of the complexity of the lyrics. Talan and Tanner prove themselves over and over to be unparalleled lyricists, evoking all kinds of emotions in the tracks of this album. I can't help but feel that we've all been there, that we've shared the experiences that Deb and Steve share through song: we've all had our down times ("Not Your Year") and our regrets ("World Spins Madly On"); we've all been the new guy or gal ("Nobody Knows Me At All") and been at a loss for words ("Take It From Me"). Another reviewer notes quite intelligently that Deb Talan manages to take what seems like nonsense and turn it into poetry:

My favourite pair of shoes?
Or maybe my bright red boots...
If they had wings?

The songs are catchy, but not overly so -- you won't find yourself wishing you could just forget any of the songs from this album. There is beauty in simplicity, and in complexity -- and then there's The Weepies.

If you're hopelessly jaded by your genre of choice (for me, it was alternative rock), give this album a chance. If you wind up disappointed, chances are you'll find someone who won't be disappointed by it.

(5 stars) - Good Music to Dance in the Stars
I was immersed in a Chagall painting listening to this CD. I danced in the Stars. I laughed at how Nobody Knows Me At All. I realized the World Spins Madly On. The Weepies create beautiful images with their songs. This was the first CD I heard from the Weepies. I loved the songs immediately. I have caught myself humming their tunes throughout my day. Here's a sample of their lyrics "Gray, quiet and tired and mean/Picking at a worried seam/I try to make you mad at me, over the phone./Red, eyes and fire and signs/I'm taken by a nursery rhyme/I want to make a ray of sunshine and never leave home." I love these people!

I'm not much of a folk song fan, but the weepies' albums is something you cannot ignore.

(5 stars) - No Crying Matter!
"Say I am You" by The Weepies is an amazingly serene compilation that is excellent for driving or relaxing after work. I first heard one of their songs on Grey's Anataomy, came here to Amazon to review the CD and absolutely loved it! I can't musically describe the music--it's not soft rock, but it's soft; it's not folk, but it reminds you of winding roads. I had been searching for music that was "mature" enough for me to enjoy, (in a thirty-something range) and The Weepies definitely delivered. From the first song, "Take It From Me" to the next, and even beyond even "Riga Girls", which was a surprise, the CD will have you moving and enjoying whatever moment you're in. The vocalization, melodic and harmonic, was a big draw for me and I hope that you will try this, too...you'll like it!
