The combined charisma of Diane Lane and John Cusack gives a lift to Must Love Dogs, a romantic comedy built on the comic potential of internet dating. Sarah (Lane, Under the Tuscan Sun), a preschool teacher and recent divorcee, has her entire family bugging her to get back in the dating pool. Finally her sister (dependable second banana Elizabeth Perkins, Big) puts an ad for Sarah online; a host of questionable prospects respond, but Sarah meets one guy--a boat builder named Jake (John Cusack, High Fidelity, Say Anything)--who shows promise, though he himself is recently divorced and a little tender. Unfortunately, Sarah also feels sparks with the father (Dermot Mulroney, My Best Friend's Wedding) of one of her students, and when paths cross, trouble follows. Must Love Dogs has some amusing scenes, but the tone and quality is wildly erratic--it's as if the movie was broken into a dozen parts and randomly assigned to different writers and directors, some of whom were making a bad sitcom, some of whom were making a good sitcom, and some of whom were making a movie that blended wry comedy with some deft psychological insight. The great cast (in addition to solid work from those mentioned above, there's also Stockard Channing and Christopher Plummer) keep the story moving, but for every amusing moment there are two that are plastic, forced, or wince-inducing. --Bret Fetzer

(5 stars) - Love, Love this Movie . . . .
I never watch this movie in the theatres. I borrowed the DVD of this movie from my best friend who said that I would like it. She was wrong because I truly love, love this movie. I like all the actors in this movie and the dogs. Diana Lane does a superb job as a recent divorcee who is being encourage by her family to not give up and to start dating again. I even liked the butcher at the local grocery store. It is after this that I decided to buy it for my own movie collection. Now I can watch it anytime I want. It is a sweet, funny movie that makes you feel good.

Perfect for those nights when you want to watch a nice romantic comedy that is serious but funny, speaks to those who have had their hearts broken more than once.

The DVD seems to be defective. I played well for better than half of the movie but then it would just quit, like someone clicked a 'Pause' button. If you leave it that way for a few minutes it would pickup at another spot in the movie and then do the same thing again... How do I get a replacement for this one???

I love it, it is a very light and real life movie. John Cusack is a very natural actor and with Diane Lane they look real good. I already watch it at least 10 times. I felt the pain of loneliness of people who go through separation came across very well.
I highly recommend it to watch

(3 stars) - The Best Thing About this Movie was the Dog
I am a Diane Lane and John Cusack fan but I couldn't buy their chemistry in this film, which was a little slow and tepid for me. (Why is Diane always playing the suffering maiden?) As a rom-com, this isn't in the league of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks vehicles...you might be better off buying or re-renting those!

Wha might have helped - more dogs! I loved the Newfoundland (apparently played by 2 six month old twins). 2 stars for the film, and 1 extra for casting the dog.
