I use one of these to operate a dust control unit in my wood shop. Currently I use an X10 RF key fob controller that talks to an X10 receiver in my shop. The X10 receiver sends an X10 power-line signal to the ApplianceLinc that activates motor in the dust control unit (think huge (6' tall) industrial vacuum cleaner).

This illustrates that the Appliancelinc is compatible with existing X10 systems.

I do plan to install an Insteon Access Point in the shop and replace the key fob with an Insteon RemoteLink, but for now it works just fine.

I was only able to get this product to work intermittently after many hours of work setting it up. I am a technically savvy person who has had the patience to build several PCs from parts. But this product's lack of documetation and non robust performance resulted in my sending everything back to Amazon for a refund. I bought the USB controller with the upgraded control software (I do not recall the name of this software) plus two ApplianceLinc V2's.

The upgraded software was poorly documented and needlessly complex. I finalyy gave up on it and used the bare bones timer software from Smarthome which I had to download.

Then I found out that you have to buy and install repeaters for the system to work properly. This was never mentioned in any literature I saw when I made my purchase. So, we hahe a system which already uses both powerline and RF and now it needs a repeater? I had already spent $200 and was detemined to get it to work as is. So I did get it working- but only one of two ApplianceLincs could get the signal (even though they were in the same room) about 40 feet away - through about two walls.

The next day, the other unit stopped receiving signals as well.

I contacted Smarthome via email to get an RMA. I got tow emails back promptly. One was an RMA. the second was aslo for an RMA but told me they woudl not take back the software becasue it ahd been opened. Well it was bundled with the USB Control device wchih cost about $70. So they were only going to credit me for the two Appliance Lincs. OK, so I sent it back using the first RMA. We will see how that goes!

I replaced the high tech timer system with a $15 programable hard wired device form Home Depot whci I set up in 15 minutes and works like a charm.

This technology has not arrived- unless you want to spend $500 to turn your lights on and off!

Smarthome's line of INSTEON products are easy to use, affordable and reliable. I have many products in my home & I easily save a few thousand $$'s a year by automating my lights and appliances to turn on/off only when in use. Good value

(5 stars) - Good for using a fan or as a 120v bed vibrator.
The ApplianceLinc is great for powering up devices such as a fan and with a PowerLinc Controller, it's great for setting up a timer for activating a 120v bed vibrator.

Great integration with Insteon network.
