I have a couple of these; one works fine. Another in a different room (with a halogen bulb) keeps causing the light to flicker. I think it's the device itself - the LED flickers when the lights flicker. (And I thought Insteon was supposed to be better able to handle power line noise than X10? Apparently not so much.)

I'm slowly migrating from X10 to Insteon, and what should I tell...
I'm impressed.
Communication is much faster and much much more reliable communication between devices, backward-compatibility with X10 is working great for me so I don't need to commit and redo everything at once.

I'm a previous owner of X10 and let me tell you that it's not very reliable and didn't like the boxy look. Plus, 256 logical (1-16 and A-P) devices aren't good enough and house/unit codes can be shared in more than one apartments sharing an electrical wiring.

No so with Insteon. With the LampLinc dimmer, it's pre-set by SmartLabs and it has a 24-bit network addressing. What I like about LampLinc is the reliability. I bought those LampLincs for Frosted Glass Floor Lamps. LampLinc Dimmer allows me to set the ramp rate and the on-level brightness, which is great for creating scenes.

LampLinc uses dual-mesh networking: powerline and radio frequency. For reliability, every devices I add acts as a repeater, so if I add more lamplincs and signalincs, reliability increases. If you've guessed that all Insteon-enabled devices are peer-to-peer, you're correct. There are no complex routing tables to worry about and I can link more devices, like say one keypadlincs and a switchlinc that transmits back and forth for status information.

Just so everyone knows, flourescent light bulb are not dimmable unless you go with incondescent or LED.

(3 stars) - Better than X10, more reliable, not 100% reliable.
Have had a number of X10 devices for about 10 years; attrition rate for X10, even with SmartHome's own brand, is about 2 items die each year. This may be due to the number of power outages in our area, despite good surge protection on the panel. This included lamp modules, in-wall keypad controllers and in-wall switches (the in-wall switches seemed the most durable).

The Insteon line seems much more reliable, as well as easier to program and more flexible. In particular, I have had to reprogram X10 devices after a power failure. With X10, I will wake up in the middle of the night with many of the X10 devices having turned themselves on after a brownout. You can program some X10 devices to "disable local control" but this programming sometimes disappears after a power brownout.

I have had Insteon products in one of my rooms for a couple of years, and just had the first lamp module die; it's the only Insteon product I've had that has died. I am gradually changing over from X10 to Insteon.

Just before this lamp module died, I ordered a bunch more. I would have gotten the extended warranty except they seemed quite reliable. Now, with a dead lamp module, I might have gotten the extended warranty from SmartHome.

(5 stars) - Insteon is X10 done right
These devices allow you to remotely control a lamp - in my case from an Insteon light switch by the entrance. Now instead of having to wander round the room turning lights on I just flick the room switch and every lamp comes on together. No setup hassles, just press a switch on this device then hold the light switch for 10 seconds and the two are linked together. No addressing, no reliability issues, it just works. So much better than X10.
