Product Reviews (4 stars) - Netgear 5 port router I love these, we can use them in remote towers (we run a WISP) and they just run and run unlike their cheaper brothers. The docs are kind of limited and such features as Spanning Tree Protocol either isn't available or they forgot to mention it in their very limited documentation, online as well. Don't let that defer you, this is a hot little item and the price is right, as they say on TV.
(5 stars) - Many trouble-free years. I spent many years volunteering for a community radio station and, as a result, dealt with large audio files quite a bit. In 2006, when I finally upgraded my computers to motherboards with gigabit PHYs, I wanted to upgrade from my trusty Linksys 10/100 hub ASAP to speed-up transfers. After a fair amount of research, I chose the GS105 based on Netgear's reputation, many positive reviews, the purported ruggedness of the ProSafe series and price (interestingly, this unit is only five dollars cheaper now than when I bought it).
Understand, although I assembled my first network in 2000, I'm far from an expert. In that time I've owned exactly 2 NICs (I don't know how many integrated adapters, quite a few), 1 hub, 2 switches and 4 routers (including 2 wi-fi), so I don't have the greatest breadth of experience. As for depth, well, I tend to be extremely lucky when it comes to computers, having few problems to begin with and easily solving them when I do, so I've never needed particularly deep knowledge. Just a little full-disclosure.
I was impressed with the unit from the get-go. It was small, well designed and constructed with excellent fit-and-finish and a heft (for it's size) that reinforced the sense of quality. It's feature list was impressive and probably would have been considered near business-class at the time. Set-up was about as easy as it can be--plug it in and you're up-and-running.
It's been connected to a variety of devices over the years (SMC and Netgear routers, Realtek, Marvell, Intel, Nvidia adapters--probably others) and it's had no compatibility issues whatsoever. Speed has always been outstanding, though I only really notice with large transfers. The unit does run warm, but not hot. I believe this is because 1) it's small size gives less area to spread the heat out and, more importantly, 2) the metal housing dissipates heat more efficiently than a plastic housing, which is actually a good thing. After running 27/7 for years, it has proven 100% reliable.
I can't speak to the problems others have had with the GS105, a lot can change in 3 years, especially with technology. All I can say is my experience has been nothing but positive. It's a great little switch with a nice set of features. Highly recommended.
(1 stars) - Waste of money The device is very flaky. It's incompatible with a lot of NICs of the leading manufactures (Intel, Realtek, Marvell). I have two PCs with Realtek network adapters and they both connect at maximum 100Mbit/s. On the other hand, my Lenova laptop and Iomega network HDD work just fine at 1000Mb/s.
It's a well known problem that is not mentioned by NetGear in the unit description (and because of this I think they are cheating customers). Unfortunately, for me it's too late to return the device but you can save your money by choosing another switch/manufacturer. The compatibility problem is well discussed at Netgear official forum, for example here: [...] encourage you to read this forum BEFORE buying the switch.
(1 stars) - Not compatible with Intel Pro1000 network adapters When connected to Intel Pro 1000 series Ethernet adapters there can be serious problems with this switch ... Inability to connect at 1Gbps, strange speeds, dropped packets. Generally not a good combination
(5 stars) - easy to use plug it in. plug in your ethernet cables. watch it go. easy as that.
There is nothing to it. This thing just works. It's fast and easy to use. I have a small home network and it's perfect for hooking up my xbox, dvr, and laptops (when i want to hardwire them) in my living room with only 1 ethernet feed to the room. good stuff.
