Sesame Street - Christmas Eve on Sesame Street

Product Details

This Emmy Award-winning musical from 1978 explores an age-old Christmas conundrum: how does a big guy like Santa Claus squeeze down all those narrow chimneys? When Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends set out to find the answer one Christmas Eve, they explore a variety of amusing theories and learn a lot about the meaning of Christmas in the process. You won't want to miss seeing all your favorite Sesame Street characters as they take to the ice at a nearby skating rink. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of all is the wealth of wonderful music--everything from traditional Christmas songs to the now famous "Keep Christmas with You" by Joe Raposo. Several numbers are signed in American Sign Language and there's even a brief mention of Hanukkah. This 60-minute, classic Sesame Street special, which teaches kids from 2 to 10 to value giving more than receiving and stresses the importance of love and togetherness, is also thoroughly entertaining. --Tami Horiuchi

(5 stars) - Beautiful!
For those of us who remember back before it was "All Elmo, All the Time," this DVD comes as a delightful return to old school Sesame Street. As a child, I had an LP Record of some of the featured songs, but missed seeing this Christmas special. Was I missing out!

This is a lovely disc with unforgettable scenes, including life-sized Sesame Muppets ice skating, Big Bird silently learning to skate with a young girl to the unfortunate but timely soundtrack of Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad," and best of all, the magical Mr. Hooper helping Bert & Ernie exchange meaningful gifts in a take on the O. Henry "Gift of the Magi" story. I had no idea there was actual video footage of that story, which I listened to so often on my record player as a child, I can still say the words along with the skit all these years later.

My five year-old son adores late-1970's & early 1980's Sesame records & skits, and this one brings tears to both of our eyes. Hooray for happy endings. Hooray for Carroll Spinney, Frank Oz & Jim Hensen. Hooray for Old School Sesame Street!

(5 stars) - The Old School Sesame Street is the Best!
Before all the political correctness took over, this was still the best programming for kids, and it still is! This was a wonderful trip down memory lane!

(5 stars) - Christmas Eve on Sesame Street
I am 59, my sons are 21 and 24. Remembering that this story is extraordinary, I purchaed it to share with the children I am now babysitting. Ah, the Sesame Street years!!!!

(5 stars) - Christmas Eve on Sesame Street
Best video ever! My daughters favorite since they were little and they are now all over 18!

(5 stars) - Big Bird, Thank God YOU Saved Christmas
I remember a day when there was no furry little red creature that had to hog all the attention on a show called Sesame Street. Ah, the days before Elmo, when Sesame Street was truly an ensemble cast.

I loved watching this movie when it was simply another episode of Seasame Street in the mid 80s. This was done in the true Hey-Day of the series, when it hadn't been recast in a politically correct typecast of a former child's show, when Elmo became the main category. Honestly, the death of Henson was the true deadzone for the show, but I digress.

Another rant, when I read another reviewer complained about how grouchy Oscar was....again, it just reminded me how watered down Sesame Street and society has become. Oscar, the Grouch, was known for being grouchy and mean and cynical. He was the perfect antithesis to Big Bird, a bright overly optimistic bigger than life character on the series. Oscar's cynicism taught children how to behave by NOT being mean and grouchy to others. Believe it or not. We didn't call people "stupid" because a green puppet did, we called people stupid because they either a) were or b) We heard/saw our parents doing it, and those are the ones we mimic, not television characters.

Anyhoo, like the Christmas Gift, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street is a Holiday Classic along the vein of Rudolph, Frosty, and the animated version of the Grinch. I remember rooting along with Big Bird that Santa Claus really did exist, but also being skeptical at the same time. After all, Oscar had so many good points, how can a man deliver all those presents to all those children in one night, and how can he fit down Chimneys? However, the movie really highlights the merriment, the excitement and the joy that being a child is all about: the magical belief in santa claus and how wonderful it is for a child to go to sleep on Christmas Eve and wake up to a stocking of presents and a tree full of treats.

If you have a child or grandchild, get them this movie. In this age of post-postmodern cynicism, where we all have turned into Oscar, this movie is a gem. In fact, I think all adults should watch this as well, it will help us reclaim our childhood yet again.
