Owen

Product Details

WOW, this album is beautiful. The acoustic work, soft and gentle voice of Mike, clever and honest lyrics that actually mean something. My favorite song on this album if I had to pick one is "Dead Mean Don't lie" however I never listen to it without listening to the entire album. The album is simply addicting, everyone that I've introduced Owen to has thanked me, a gentle, mellow, soft, and beautiful album. This is a must have, at least for me it is

(4 stars) - "Sympathy...Honesty....God Knows I'm Trying...."
Another guy who records albums in his mother's basement? Who cares? That's what people(including me) think(or thought) about Owen, but there's a lot of depth in Owen's albums (all of them as a matter of fact). Owen's first album definitely isn't weak at all and coud be thought of as his best by some for sure. This S/T album flows like a dream with beautiful atmospheres, the randomness, and deja vu(repetition) that connects the album like glue. Owen's lyrics seem really open ended to let the listener relate to the album. Themes of self-improvement, regrets, relationships, and etc. make the album feel like a positive visit with a shrink. This album and the second album really helped me get through my life of depression and doubt, so yes I am biased.

"Declaration of Imcompentence" is my anthem..."I've got nothing to say/I've got building blocks for teeth/and a tube sock for a tongue" and "I can't do my hair right/have a good time/can't fall asleep with my girl" and "I don't know what I think/I'm unsure/That I could or couldn't care/less or more/about everyone I do or don't know". Ironically with these lyrics Owen plucks beautiful arpeggios, catchy drum beat atmospheres coming in like a dream that ends like a montage in a movie with the break-up chorus, "If you don't want to see/ the worst in me/you've got two choices/cover your eyes/both hands tight/or just leave." One of the best produced, mixed, and performed numbers by a Kinsella

One thing that this release lacks is the polished Owen voice that is rough at times or demeaning. Owen's vocals on this album are really uniform and high pitched all the way though lacking the bitterness and characters of the next record. This record is really personal and cohesive though making it different from the rest of the catalog. S/T is one of the definite Owen records that stands apart from the rest of the albums with the atmospheres, arrangements, production, voice, and beautiful guitar(found on all Owen's albums). The next album rocks even harder like some Neil Young records(sometimes) or Sun Kil Moon.

(3 stars) - Pretty potent
Kinsella's creative consistency remains intact with Owen's debut. A solo project in the strictest sense, the challenging yet melodically relaxed pace sets most of these acoustic-led forays down a pleasant enough path, though over-enunciates tying the introspective, emo-themed lyricism together. In the disc's pretty short running time most songs sound beautiful and talented, though few remain memorable. We see here many good ideas applied through sporadic moments of inspiration, but often without a compelling backbone to prop up much of Owen's sweeping sentiment.

(4 stars) - Fans of American Football
A must have for fans of American Football. The fans were disappointed to see it go by the wayside in 1999, but were pleasantly surprised by Mike Kinsella's "Owen." Although not quite American Football, "Places To Go," "Declaration of Incompetence," "You Should Do It Now," are probably the closest we're going to get. But darn it, I really miss the horns ...
