Product Details This thermometer instantly ascertains the temperature of foods, whether they're on the buffet line or being cooked. Its 1-inch dial, protected by a shatterproof plastic lens, displays temperatures from 0 to 220 degrees F. The thermometer comes with a pocket case and has a 5-inch stainless-steel stem. Should it seem to be off kilter, the thermometer can be recalibrated by twisting the hexagonal hub beneath the dial with pliers. --Fred Brack
Product Reviews (1 stars) - You Better Check Calibration I bought 2 because of the price. When I recieved the thermomter my first task was to immerse both of them in boiling water and then ice water. The neither unit was calibrated. Worse they both couldn't be calibrated because there is no way to adjust the span. So in the end they hit the garbage can. You get what you pay for.
(5 stars) - An absolute necessity. Unless you are one of the gifted who can tell your food is perfectly cooked by touch, you will find this (or any high-quality) thermometer indispensable. Having family members who have different tastes in beef doneness and a fanatical devotion to making sure my chicken is fully (and safely) cooked, I've used a Taylor thermometer for years. The pocket clip makes it easy to keep on hand with you as you move to stove or grill. There may be fancier or more expensive thermometers out there, but this is a kitchen standby. You can even utilize this to gauge milk-frothing temps or bread baking temps... there are so many applications where a thermometer comes in handy.
(3 stars) - Melts at 400 degrees These seem like decent little thermometers but are not oven safe contrary to the packaging. I bought two for cooking to replace an older thermometer that is unreadable now. I read the packaging when I first got them to verify they can be used in the oven and it said they were "not safe for rotisseries or convection ovens due to high heat". As I was making chicken in a regular oven I figured it should be OK, only to find out after 45 minutes or so at 400 degrees F the plastic on the front had melted.
I am keeping the other one as it works well for checking the temperature, but don't buy one of these if you are looking for something safe up to regular oven temperatures.
(1 stars) - Reading not consistent. My thermometer will not stay calibrated. Might be user error, I don't know. I have tried checking temps in ice water and boiling water(even allowing for barometric pressure and altitude for boiling water). Here is what happens...I insert the probe in the water then adjust the face using the handy tool molded into the thermometer case. Holding the thermometer in the water for awhile to verify that the reading does not change, maybe 2-4 minutes. I remove it, let it cool and reinsert it and the temp is off by as much as 6-7 degrees. Sometimes, the temp is correct. When I received it almost two months ago I calibrated it, but never reinserted it multiple times into the water to check it. Just a couple weeks ago, I was measuring some temps when some friends disagreed with my results. I told them I was confident the temp was accurate as I had calibrated the tool. Kind of embarassing to double check it and find out that I was incorrect. Hopefully, I can exchange it for one that is consistently accurate. If I can, I will update this review with the exchange process.
(5 stars) - Nice thermometer, nice price This thermometer works great for setting my small wine refrigerator to the right temperature. Wine does taste better if it is not refrigerated too cold. The thermometer is universal enough to be use from room to room to check AC and heating, or to check temperatures in the freezer as well as a refrigerator. When it is out of use, I keep it on my desk as a indoor thermometer.
