An extensive look at the future of space travel is offered in the PBS documentary "Voyage to the Milky Way." The camera visits a convention of model- rocket aficionados in Indiana, a meeting in Colorado of an organization calling for exploration of Mars, and an announcement held at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum for the "X Prize"--a hefty cash award awaiting the entrepreneur who can provide what would essentially be space tourism for civilians. While this continuing interest in space is obvious, the enormous problems of advancing past our own moon with manned flight is detailed by scientists and engineers who are trying to tackle the problem of deep-space travel. The enormous distances to other stars can't practically be traveled by existing rocket propulsion systems, and some innovative alternative technology, such as a laser-powered vehicle, is shown in early testing stages. The possible use of antimatter as a fuel is discussed, as are theoretical voyages using black holes as something of a fast lane through space. The varied viewpoints, ranging from dreams of self-proclaimed "grass- roots space entrepreneurs" to thoughtful scientists, are often fascinating. And this documentary, in the course of its two hours, provides a thoughtful look at how humans may take their next steps into the heavens. --Robert J. McNamara

(4 stars) - This Video Will Appeal to All Ages
This is a very watchable video that focuses not only on space exploration, but how ordinary people's lives are intertwined with space exploration. Technical jargon is minimal. It would be excellent for showing in a junior high or high school science class. It moves along at a good pace, and has an upbeat score. There are few "talking heads" that often slow down the pace of documentaries. I enjoyed it, and bought a copy for my junior high science class.
