Product Details One second is all it takes to yield perfectly cut fruit slices with this tool by Oxo. Also a great tool for pears, the apple divider's soft, oversize rubber handles relieve and absorb the pressure from your hands for a nearly effortless cut. Positioned at an angle upward from the blade base, the handles ensure that hands and fingers have ample clearance from tabletops and cutting boards. Stainless steel makes the blades easy to clean and dishwasher-safe. The Good Grips line features durable, nonslip, flexible handles on every product. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably and softly, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle puts less tension on the hands while still providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets, the handles are slip-proof--wet or dry--as well as dishwasher-safe. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro
Product Reviews (5 stars) - Contrary to some reviews, this will last FOREVER Allow me to explain my apparently absurd title... Some people have complained that it arrived cracked or dull, or that it cracked or broke within an unreasonable time. Apparently they did not read the card that the corer came attached to. On it OXO states: "Satisfaction Guarantee: If for any reason your are not satisfied with this product, return it for repair, replacement, or refund." To me this means if it has anything wrong with it or you don't like it for any reason, you can return it for a repair, replacement, or refund tomorrow or 3 years from now. There is no time limit in the statement; there is no asterisk with fine print following. So, unless OXO is lying, it is guaranteed virtually forever.
Next my own experience. I received mine from Amazon a week ago (no cracks in the plastic, the blades are sharp) and have been using it since then, just preparing a single apple at a time for my own pleasure. I really like how quickly and easily I can get an apple ready to eat! I wish I had gotten one of these years ago so I would have eaten more apples and fewer less healthful snacks. (Personal note: my teeth aren't very good for biting so if an apple isn't sliced I'm much less likely to want to eat it.)
I don't have a cutting board so I have been cutting right on my small ceramic serving plate. I have found it cuts smoothly and easily if I rock it a little as I push it down to keep in control and not smash the plate. (In this case it is probably a good thing the frame is plastic and not metal.)
I am grateful to the reviewer who suggested to slice off the bottom 1/16" of the apple before using the corer so that the skin doesn't hold it all together and make it hard to separate the slices. That little effort makes a huge difference; the slices will just fall right out (by themselves or with a gentle poke) when you finish the downstroke. All you have to do is wiggle the core loose and rinse off the corer and you are ready to eat.
This is the first of these that I've ever used so I can't compare with others, although I did shop around on Amazon and saw that OXO makes an all metal version for a couple of dollars more for those who don't think plastic will last. Also I saw another manufacturer who claimed their product was "large" so that might be a better choice for those who need to slice larger apples (although this one seems to have plenty of room left over with the apples I've sliced so far).
It's an unqualified winner for me, so it gets my full five stars.
(4 stars) - SHORT term I have owned this apple slicer and corer for about four years. It's currently cracking on a few sided and I will have to buy another one. This worked for the short time but long term I would get an all metal apples slicer and corer. My I make apple slices for my husband in his lunch and give them to my son at snack time. So mine get's used on a daily basis for one of them. For the most part this apple corer worked great while it lasted.
(1 stars) - Pure Junk I intended to replace an antique apple corer that I got when my Grandmother died. It was getting dull and because it was flat across the top it was a nuisance to use when making more than one pie. I saw this Oxo unit with the nice offset and I bought it. What a piece of junk. The cutting blades are dull and all it does is leave the core and apple slices attached to a web of uncut apple skin on the cutting board. Unfortunately, I didn't use the item until recently when the apples ripened. Therefore I can't return it. Anyone who is happy with this thing got a different one than I did or doesn't know what a good one is supposed to do. It's back to the knuckle-rapping antique for me - at least it cuts. I tossed this piece of junk in the trash a week ago. At least that action had a satisfying feel to it. JUNK. Also,I'm a chef, so I've used hundreds of kitchen tools and gadgets. This is one of the worst. DON'T BUY THIS JUNK. GO TO WALMART.
(5 stars) - Amazing! I was skeptical when I first started looking for an apple slicer. Saw it on TV and didn't think it would work as good as it does. I was looking for the stainless steel OXO, but the plastic one is very sturdy.
Now I'm saving money slicing my own apples instead of buying those pre-sliced ones at [...]!
Thanks Oxo
(5 stars) - Great alternative than a knife I cut my left ring finger that required stitches, unlike the other times when I cut fingers. Since, I have an aversion to using a knife. We got this Oxo Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider, and my problem with knives went away. Now I am happier to cut my slices of apples without hurting myself. So easy to use and wash.
