Like other reviewers, I'm absolutely amazed at the price of this CD. For less than the price of a fast-food sandwich I've got two excellent performances of two great violin concertos. I didn't go looking for great performances; the finale of the Tchaikovsky concerto had been running through my head for three days non-stop because I couldn't remember how it ended. My CD copy had gone AWOL and I'd never gotten around to loading it on my iPod, so I came to Amazon desperate to find a sample track I could listen to and make the music in my head stop. I found this CD, and its price combined with the favorable reviews made the impulse purchase a given.

Please understand, this disc isn't just good for the price; the performances would still be excellent at two or three-times the price. The sound engineering is also very good, though not perfect. I noticed some harshness in the strings of the Tchaikovsky Allegro moderato movement as I drove in to work this morning. I finally pulled over to twiddle with the settings of my car stereo to see if I could smooth them out, but no luck. I've got it playing in my office now and the harshness is still there, but it disappears in the Brahms. And did I mention that the Brahms performance is my new favorite of that concerto? Bravo to Nathan Milstein.

(5 stars) - Another Pleasant Surprise!
I will never understand how CD's as splendid as this can be produced at such bargain prices. I was missing the Tchaikovsky concerto from my collection, and I always enjoyed it, so I was anxious to add one, but I didn't know whose to select. I always admired Nathan Milstein growing up, but I was leery of buying this recording, especially at this LOW price. I suspected that the sound quality would leave much to be desired. How wrong I was! Not only was Milstein as stupendous as I remembered him, but the sound quality was as good as any CD in my collection. If I could give this disc more than five stars I would do so! I particularly recommend this CD to those young whippersnappers out there who have been lucky enough to grow up to the likes of Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Bell (How lucky they have been!), and think that no other violin virtuosos ever existed. At any price - never mind this mind-blowing basement bargain - this recording is a MUST ADD to any classical collection. Buy it! You'll be glad you did!

I love this recording it is one of my favorite recordings of these two violin concertos. Milstein's performance is exhilarating and resplendent. the remastering of the analog masters is well done. A great bargain for the price.

i bought this cd when i first started playing violin and it was the first recording of the brahms and tchaikovsky concertos i ever owned. now, over ten years later, i've heard countless renditions of the two romantic masterpieces, and these are still my favorite.

milstein's technique is flawless and his tone is pure and rich. his interpretation might be too subdued for some, but to my ears, it's exactly right; not too flashy, not too fast, just a perfect understanding of the music.

effortless, brilliant, sublime -- if you love these concertos (or even if you don't), you should own this recording.

PS. i just bought another copy. =)
