Undertow

Product Details

Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on "Sober" and "Crawl Away". Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy ("Intolerance," "Sober"; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and its consequences ("Prison Sex"), and deliberate ignorance ("Swamp Song"). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on "Bottom," which, along with "4 Degrees," deals with questions of identity. Undertow is also Tool's most musically adventurous album, lacking the occasionally numbing sameness of Aenima, and with considerably more sophistication than their previous work. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

Product Reviews

(4 stars) - I like it
Anything "Tool" has a big chance at being good or great. This particular album to me is good, but I like "Aenima" and "Lateralus" more because it sounds to me like the band played what they meant to. Although "Undertow" is very good, it does sound and feel experimental to me.

I bought my CD used but the disc was in almost brand-spankin-new condition. The case had a few minor scratches but nothing major.

(5 stars) - Takes a true Tool fan to appreciate this IMO
I'll admit, it took me quite a few listens to actually fall in love with this album. If you're new to Tool, I personally would say not to get this as your first or second album. I'd first buy Lateralus. But anyway, it takes some patience to love it. Some key tracks would be, Undertow, 4 Degrees, Sober, and Swamp Song.

(4 stars) - When my soul was dark
I thouroughly enjoyed listening to this. I can honestly say this was good in 1993, but would I listen to it in 2009? who knows? I used to have this album, but never got past listening to "Sober", and "Prison Sex" the 2 songs that were popular down here in Florida. Other songs to commment about are: "Swamp Song", "Undertow", and "Disgustipated". This was underrated, and dismissed rather quickly. I feel it's time to reintroduce this to the radio.

(3 stars) - Captain crunch
3 1/2

In many ways a precursor to what is largely considered their masterwork, Undertow simply does not have the melodic heft of its successor, but as far as stricter power-chord, crunch-driven affairs go, rarely had the language sounded so appealing, if repeating.

(5 stars) - Tool
I really like this CD. It is good for someone how enjoys thoughtful and deep lyrics, and likes a hard industrial/rock sound.
