| Ok, so I was browsing around Halfvalues (like always) when I discovered that not only were a lot of the cartoons from my childhood now available on DVD format, but that Halfvalues has nicely reduced the initial asking price on a good majority of them! I just can't believe it! Anywho, I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with ya in the chance you might have accidentally glossed over one that you may have been wanting also. Here goes... First of all, one of the best Disney cartoon series was the cartoon 'Gargoyles - The Complete First Season (Special 10th Anniversary Edition)'. It sported great animation, creative storylines and a great cast of voice actors (mostly from the Star Trek series). The basic premise is that a long time ago Gargoyles and mankind lived side-by-side until almost all the Gargoyles were destroyed by renegade humans. The remaining Gargoyles were either put under a spell to remain stone statues for 100 years or went into hiding. Now awake in the moder era the Gargoyles must learn about their new time and re-aquaint themselves with modern man. Well, it looks like someone at Disney has wised-up and decided to finally let fans have access to more than the same few video tapes released several years ago. And in DVD quality to boot. Another great cartoon from my kid-dom is the 80s classic 'Jem - The Complete 1st & 2nd Seasons'. When a former record company owner passes away he wills the business to his daughter. In order for her to keep the company afloat she uses a hologram machine that transforms her and her friends into outragious rock-n-roll singers. Their competition are the bratty rival group The Misfits who are out to get Jem and the Holograms at any cost. With this DVD set, not only do you get one season's worth of episodes but two! Make sure you don't miss out on 'Jem - Season 3, Part 1' either. The famous orange fat cat Garfield was also another of my favorites. Back in the 80s, the character's owners put together a series of tv specials on the lovable feline and now have come to the happy idea to release them on DVD. The Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials are packaged together in 'Garfield: Holiday Celebrations', and the life of Garfield specials "Here Comes Garfield", "Garfield On The Town", and "Garfield Gets A Life" are packaged together in 'Garfield as Himself'. They are ALL great episodes but my favorite from the holiday set has to be Halloween when Garfield and Odie go out trick-or-treating but instead get involved in a ghost pirate adventure. From the life set I love "Garfield On The Town" as we get to see the origin of Garfield. We meet his mother, find out why he loves lasagna so much, and how he came to live with Jon. Don't forget to take a gander at 'Garfield and Friends, Volume One' either. Superheroes played a big part in my childhood as well. I think it all started with 'Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection)'. Icon heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman and Robin fighting villains like The Cheetah, Lex Luthor, Giganta and Bizarro were eye candy I just couldn't get enough of. We now have a modern version of the retro show in 'The Justice League Collection (DVD 3-Pack) (Secret Origins/Justice on Trial/Paradise Lost)'. Both are good. And while younger audiences just might not 'get' the older show, it's love thankfully isn't lost on the older generation. Solo heroes like 'Batman - The Animated Series, Volume One (DC Comics Classic Collection)' and 'Batman - The Animated Series, Volume Two (DC Comics Classic Collection)' also helped bring a new look at comic book animation from the simple good guy vs. bad guy storylines. From these fantastic beginnings animation expanded to bring other known heroes to the foreground like the 'Superman - The Animated Series, Volume One (DC Comics Classic Collection)'. Some cartoons even tried to take on a more social stance like in the series 'X-Men - The Legend of Wolverine' where we are shown a world where people who were 'born different' (born with super powers) are racially hated by the rest of the world. A series that definately needs to be collected in a box set. Other DVDs from this series are: 'X-Men - The Phoenix Saga', 'X-Men - Reunion Parts 1 & 2 / Out of the Past Parts 1 & 2 / No Mutant is an Island', and 'X-Men - Sanctuary Parts 1 & 2 / Weapon X, Lies and Videotape / Proteus Parts 1 & 2'. The series was later re-vamped into 'X-Men Evolution Collection'. Just as colorful and interesting was the series 'My Little Pony - The Complete First Season'. Magical ponies with wings andhorns ruled the land in the 80s and just about every little girl I knew had one. Though I showed stony face in front of my friends, I was secretly addicted to the cartoon series. It was fun, imaginative and was always wonderful to watch. I'm just glad it's still around to enjoy. Similarly the series 'Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer' was a hoot to see. Rainbow Brite centered around a magical girl who lived in the clouds with colorful friends who could travel to earth on a horse who could gallop on rainbows. Though it may sound cheesy, trust me, it's not. The villain Murky and his sidekick Lurky were pure comic genius. For those lucky enough to have cable, the muppet series 'Fraggle Rock - Where It All Began' was always an adventure to watch. Jim Henson supplied audiences with the story of little colorful people who live behind human walls ala The Littles, loved radishes and had to contend with grumpy trolls. Total 80s fun. 'Transformers - First Season Collector's Edition' was also monsterous fun. Basically it's the story of feuding alien robots who crashland on Earth and can transform into various earth vehicles in desguise. It gained such popularity that 'The Transformers - The Movie' was made and several spin-off series are still made to date. Over the years more modern cartoons like 'The Simpsons - The Complete First Season', 'Family Guy, Vol. 1 (Seasons 1 & 2)' and 'South Park - The Complete First Season' have filled some of my time on tv, but I'm just glad there are DVD releases of the classics to enjoy to bring me back to where it all started. |
