| Homeward Bound - The Incredible Journey |
|
Product Details Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon
Product Reviews (5 stars) - Can A Film About Talking Animals Really Make You Cry? In This Case, Yes! As a young child, I watched this movie many times over, enjoying the silly humor of the three animals and being completely sucked in by the sappy message. Many years later, I again sat down to watch it with my younger sister...and again found myself transported back to my childhood, even to the point of brushing back tears at the final touching scene.
It is very obvious why this film was bound to be a hit with children: Almost all children love animals, the humor is at a level that even young ones can laugh at, and the three protagonists are ones that all children can identify with: the aged Golden Retriever Shadow, the frisky pup Chance, and the sharp-tongued and witty cat Sassy.
Surprisingly, however, the film will also both touch and entertain viewers who have graduated elementary school. The "characters" aren't too cheesy to make you roll your eyes, the plot isn't so animal-rights leaning (like Free Willy, for example) that it will make your stomach turn, and I think that the simple love between a child and his/her pet is something that we can still relate to long after we've "grown up". If you are not dabbing at your eyes (or at least seeing through some mist) as the end credits roll, then the fault may just lie within your cynical self.
So, I would highly recommend this movie for family viewing of any and all kinds. For your child it will be a wonderful adventure, while at the same time you will be transported back to a time when life was much more innocent...childhood.

(5 stars) - homeward bound the incredible journey The following review by Isabella (6 yr old):
"this thrilling and thoroughly captivating theatrical hit from disney has become an instant favorite with audiences of aLL Ages. you'll lose your heart to chance, a fun-loving american bulldog pup; sassy, a hilarious himalayan cat who lives up to her name; and shadow, a wise old golden retriever all of whom express themselves with very familiar human voices!."
Parental comment: Beautifully produced. The scary parts are appropriate for young viewers. The scenery is breathtaking. The twists and turns keep this straight forward story moving along at a brisk and interesting pace. And the outcome is quite emotional.
(5 stars) - Especially Wonderful for Children of the 90's. This is one of the best movies from my childhood - a movie made before CGI, before animals had mouths that moved, before special effects took over a majority of the film. This film made me smile, laugh, and cry. I'm almost 23 now, and I can go back to my old VHS copy of this film and still feel the same emotions I had when I was younger. It will always be one of those family films that withstands the test of time, and will bring a tug at the heart for anyone who watches it. Being a part of the generation who went from VHS to DVDS, internet downloads, and so forth; I can promise you this movie withstands the test of time, and still is a joy to watch with your parents, siblings, and friends REGARDLESS of age. It is pleasure on all emotional levels, and rewards your tears. Definitely a good classic movie for anyone who grew up in the 90's!!
