(5 stars) - For work or travel, excellent
I use this book not only for travel through W. Africa, but also for work. So many times I need to reference small, out-of-the-way places in the region that are otherwise unmentioned in books or on the Internet. Chances are, if it exists it's got a write-up (and, if you're lucky, a great street map) in Lonely Planet. Don't know what I would've done without for 4 years covering Africa for the State Department.

(3 stars) - not always accurate but handy to prepare your trip
I used this book going from mauritania down to ghana. Handy to prepare the trip (ex where to go and what to do) but not always accurate for the adresses/phone numbers. An updated edition would be welcome.

(4 stars) - Could use more info on some countries
In general the guide is fine, however for some of the smaller countries (like Sierra Leone), there is too little information.

(3 stars) - Quite helpful
I used this guide in Ghana and Togo. It was quite helpful, but often felt incomplete. It gives great information about lodging and food, but when it comes to transit issues it is somewhat ambiguous, and often leaves big gaps for you to figure out on the fly. For travel in Ghana, the Bradt guide is far superior.

I love Lonely Planet books. I use them extensively when traveling or planning to travel. They help bring a lot of fun to travel.
