Product Details The lure of Italy is hard to resist. For four British women, the attraction brings them to San Salvatore, a Tuscan villa, for an entire month of vacation. The women are very different. Lotty Wilkins, nervous and talkative, is treated like a child by her husband and is starting to chafe from his oppression. Rose Arbuthnot, with a "face like a disappointed madonna," is pious, sweet, and desperately unhappy. Margaret Fisher, stern and demanding, lives in a past peppered with famous literary encounters. And Caroline Dester, striking beautiful and popular, is lonely and bored with her whirlwind social life. The four rent San Salvatore together, and immediately begin to change. What is it that changes these women? Sun and rest in a beautiful place? Yes, partly, but mostly it is the friendship of three extraordinary people.
Product Reviews (5 stars) - Good but not what i thoughtI it was timely and handled well, but the description didn't make me realize that the book itself was for people who have trouble reading regular print. So, its a book with HUGE lettering which it not useful to me.
(5 stars) - Enchanting! I had always loved the movie adaptation of this book (now finally available on DVD!). As expected, my enjoyment of the book exceeded even the beautiful screen images. Van Arnim's language - though at times a bit longwinded - is beautiful. She creates images with words that can never be captured on film. But the story is the best part of all. You travel with these women from dreary, post-WWI England to the glorious sunshine of the Italian coast. It is filled with the positive message to enjoy life and to love. Since reading this book, I have looked for more of von Arnim's work, and have been equally delighted. She is an author to discover!
(4 stars) - If you're craving to get away from it all This is a wonderful book. Reading it was like experiencing those old Calgon bubble bath commercials, "Calgon take me away!" I felt like I was on the most relaxing vacation as I read it. The only reason I gave it four stars is because parts of the end weren't as fulfilling as the rest of the book, but it is so worth reading.
(1 stars) - DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION I am 1/3rd of the way through this book. If you enjoy Austen and the like, as I do, you will enjoy this novel. However, I encourage you to buy a different edition. This edition of the book is riddled with typos. "r" instead of "n", "her" instead of "he", etc. And it's not just occaisionally. Sometimes it's several on a page. It interupts the flow of the story and I'm about ready to chuck this copy and check a different edition out of the library.
(5 stars) - Lazy vacation read Enjoyed this lovely period escapist light romance. Recommend you read it on your vacation or when you desperately need a restorative vacation but can only get away in imagination.
This story about a spring escape from rainy dreary London to a remote Italian villa even smells beautiful, the descriptions are so evocative.
Having seen the movie several years ago, I found the book almost identical, only one small twist in the "plot". I still can't say which twist I'd choose.
(They really need to get the movie onto DVD for release in the U.S.)
