I received this pamphlet mascaraing as a book with my Amazon.com order yesterday. My husband and I thought it was some kind of gift with purchase. Expectant parents, more than any other demographic, are targeted constantly with promotional literature advertising something our child can't live without. As such, I didn't even give this "book" a real glance. Surely, I didn't pay for a flimsy paperback, bound by 2 staples. After my husband questioned how much I paid for it, I started second guessing my assumption that it was just an add in pamphlet. So, I took a look at my order. You cannot imagine my shock when I learned I'd paid more than $13.00 for it. I wish that was where my horror ended. It is not.
I sit here in absolute disbelief that someone actually published this. I was convinced that it was privately published, printed, and distributed. How could this have crossed the desks of actual professional editors? To my surprise, it was published by an actual publishing company. Shame on you, Trafford Publishing.
The punctuation is embarrassing. I thought I was being nit-picky when I was put off by the first sentence, "When I found out you were coming my world became larger than life." A missing comma is a common mistake. It's not one I would expect to find in a published book, but I thought I could get beyond it. Then, I turned the page.
There is literally not one sentence that is properly punctuated. What makes it unforgivable is that the lack of punctuation isn't a consistent theme in the book. It isn't that the writer took artistic license and intentionally left out punctuation to make a point, as many great writers do. Quite simply, she just doesn't know how to punctuate properly and the publishing house was too lazy or ignorant to correct it.
My favorite part of the book is where she writes a series of declarative sentences detailing all she plans to teach her unborn child. She writes, "I will teach you to explore I will teach you to dream big I will teach you to be free I will teach you to be strong I will teach you to love passionately, I will teach you everything I know, And I will teach you to learn everything I don't."
For her child's sake, I'm just thankful that she didn't write, "I will teach you fourth grade English."
The illustrations are actually pretty good. I'd recommend Marissa McTasney, the author and illustrator, stick to illustrations or find a publishing house that actually reads the books before publishing. As it is, the cost of the book is laughable. I'm sending it back with absolute disgust and bewilderment.
