| Wagners Ring: Turning the Sky Round |
|
Product Details Commentary on and a concise, lucid interpretation of the opera world's most complex masterwork, expanded from the author's popular intermission talks during Met Opera broadcasts.
Product Reviews (4 stars) - good, what there is of it I prefer this book over the Shaw opus. Shaw also argues that the Ring is a political comment on events happening at the time and an allegory on philosophical ideas prevailing at the time. Shaw doe not back up his claims, but this author does.
Some of the author's claims would be difficult to prove or disprove, however. Wagner foretelling Freud and Jung? Maybe, maybe not.
The author also briefly mentions Darwin. Since the Ring presents gods, demigods, and dwarfs inhabiting the earth from earliest times, it could only be Darwinian on a deeply symbolic level.
I was disappointed with the appendix containing motifs in musical notation. Out of more than a hundred motifs, it contains only 24.

(3 stars) - Breif introduction to Wagner's music If you want a short but complete introduction to Wagner's Ring , this book is a good choice. There's also a list of recordings recommended by the author ( which includes the "must have" versions of the Ring available today ) .
(5 stars) - Concise and illumuninating - more than a mere précis In this slender volume, Fr. Lee not only provides a neat summary of Wagner's epic, but an ample and insightful look at the political and philophical underpinnings of the opera's genesis. His discussion of Schopenhauer's influence, albeit a surface treatment, never overwhelms the reader. Nor does the discussion of the leitmotives bog the reader down and detract from a lively and personal narrative. Highly recommended.
(5 stars) - Wagner's Ring With New Eyes and Ears I found Father Owen Lee's interpretation of Wagner's Ring concise, beautifully written and coherent. I was utterly mesmerized and could not put the book down until I had read it.
