Sidney Poitier directed--without much distinction, sorry to say--this 1980 comedy teaming Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as New York knuckleheads who try their luck in California and are accused of robbing a bank. Most of the laughs concern their survival strategies in prison (at one point, Wilder decides to "reach out and talk" to some hulking murderer) and their plans to escape. Both performers are so brilliant in any situation that they give this film plenty of funny moments (one or two of which became instantly classic), but this is not exactly a film for the ages. --Tom Keogh

 (4 stars) - Fun and just plain silly movie!
Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are always great together, and this is one of their best! Just plain silly, funny and stupid (not the movie or the performances, just the silliness is stupid funny!!:) and I highly recomend this to everyone for a good old laugh at some goofy, silliness in a fun movie!
 (5 stars) - Wilder And Pryor At Their Peak
Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor was a good comedy team of the 1970s, making several hit movies together, this being one of the more memorable.
Viewing this movie recently after a 25-year absence, it was a shock to me to hear the language. I had remembered this strictly as a light-hearted comedy but I can see why it's rated "R." That is solely for the language, especially by Pryor, but he was known for his profane humor.
If you can put up with that, the film is downright funny, even today. I found myself laughing out loud at a few scenes, all of which I remembered vividly from several viewings in the '70s. They are still just as funny today.
Who could forget that mammoth criminal with the long, long name - Erland van Lidth de Jeude? He was the guy that scared the heck out of everyone, just by his physical presence. In real life, that man was the opposite of his projected image on screen. He was a graduate of MIT, an accomplished opera singer, an Olympic wrestler, devoted husband and father, writer, etc. The poor man died at the age of 34.
It also was interesting to see such a young looking Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams.
(5 stars) - Absolutely perfect
Stir Crazy is one of my all time favorites. It may have a lot to do with being an absolute fan of Richard Pryor when I was young, but of all his movies this one had a great plot and perfectly timed humor. I think Eddie Murphy's LIFE was also inspired by this movie. Still to this day I wonder what life would have been like once they escape. I mean trouble was their shadow. Looking back on it now, it's great to see all the young faces and marvel on just how time flies. If you never saw this movie, you just don't know what you're missing.
(4 stars) - The best Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder movie ever!
Even though the duo had done "Silver Streak" four years prior, this is the movie where the duo make chemistry. This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I got so many favorite scenes, like Richard teaching Gene how to act "bad" in prison, how they both end up sharing a cell with Grossberger, and when the gay dude kisses Pryor! This movie still holds up today, and a lot funnier than many movies today. Sad to say, the other two follow up movies are nowhere as good as this, because in the late 80s, Richard was getting sicker and his appearance was deteriorating. But, this is a classic, and it will leave you wanting more!

This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen! Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are great together!
