Product Details At last, for a generation that's materially ambitious yet financially clueless comes I Will Teach You To Be Rich, Ramit Sethi's 6-week personal finance program for 20-to-35-year-olds. A completely practical approach delivered with a nonjudgmental style that makes readers want to do what Sethi says, it is based around the four pillars of personal finance banking, saving, budgeting, and investingand the wealth-building ideas of personal entrepreneurship. Sethi covers how to save time by not wasting it managing money; the guns and cars myth of credit cards; how to negotiate like an Indianthe conversation begins with "no"; why "Budgeting Doesn't Have to Suck!"; how to get things rollingfor realwith only $20; what most people don't understand about taxes; how to get a CEO to take you out to lunch; how to avoid the Super Mario Brothers trap by making your savings work harder than you do; the difference between cheap and frugal; the hidden relationship between money and food. Not to mention his first key lesson: Getting started is more important than being the smartest person in the room. Integrated with his website, where readers can use interactive charts, follow up on the latest information, and join the community, it is a hip blueprint to building wealth and financial security. Every month, 175,000 unique visitors come to Ramit Sethi's website, Iwillteachyoutoberich.com, to discover the path to financial freedom. They praise him thoughtfully ("Your site summarizes everything I want with my lifeto be rich in finances, rich in experience, rich in family blessings," Dan Esparza) and effusively ("Dude, you rock. I love this site!" Richard Wu). The press has caught on, too: "Ramit Sethi is a rising star in the world of personal finance writing . . . one singularly attuned to the sensibilities of his generation. his style is part frat boy and part silicon Valley geek, with a little bit of San Francisco hipster thrown in" (San Francisco Chronicle). His writing is smart, his voice is full of attitude, and his ideas are uncommonly sound and refreshingly hype-free.
Product Reviews (5 stars) - *Intelligent*, but still easy money management I've been reading Ramit Sethi's blog for a while, but never really implemented any of his solutions. This book inspired me. It details everything you need to know to free yourself from the burden of worrying about money.
It covers:
* Conscious Spending - You'll never hear him tell you "Don't buy that! Stop buying lattes! Stop wasting your money on frivolous things!". What Ramit says is: Figure out what you enjoy in life. Then set up your budget so that you're spending money on that, and not on impulse buys. If you wanna spend $700 a week on going out -- Here's how to do it intelligently, and guilt-free.
* Easy budgets - Use the internet, and automatic transfers, in order to NOT think about your money. You spend a few hours over a couple months to get everything setup, then spend literally a couple minutes every few months to just check on things.
* Investing basics - Any comprehensive budget needs to plan for the long-term. This book explains exactly what you need to know, then gives you the option of going more in-depth.
* Haggling - Scripts to get yourself out of bank fees, ask for a payraise, etc.
Overall, I feel like every late teen - early twenty-something...heck, even into late 20s, should read this. I'm about to start loaning it out to my friends. It's the perfect book young people if you want to be smart about your money.
(5 stars) - Best perspective on personal finance I bought this book right after I graduate college (May 2009) as a sort of personal finance crash course before I started my first "real" job. I had read other finance books before and although they contained good information, I found them incredibly boring. Ramit writes this book and sifts through all of the normal BS and mumbo-jumbo and does a great job of getting the message across. Although the book is aimed at a younger audience, i.e, myself, anyone can improve their financial situation by applying his techniques.
The chapters on negotiating with credit card companies and banks are especially good. After reading the book, I discovered his blog ([...]) which has also provided me with a wealth of financial information.
Overall, it was about as good as it gets for a finance book and I highly recommend to anyone wishing to improve/simplify their personal finances.
(5 stars) - The first personal finance book anyone should buy I love this book. It is so practical. It is step-by-step, realistic, plain English financial guidance for our generation. I am a 20-something who is fairly responsible with her money, but my parents didn't teach me about personal finance, how to contribute to 401(k), creating a savings plan, etc. This book is a huge bang for your buck. And the guidance is so easy to implement because it takes you through action one step at a time. Plus, in addition to being so useful, it is entertaining - Ramit is hilarious!
(5 stars) - The personal finance book I wish I had when I was 18 This is the personal finance book I wish I had when I was 18. I would highly recommend this book to any young person with an interest in personal finance. Straight-forward, to-the-point, witty and actionable.
(5 stars) - Perfect for Recent College Graduates (with Jobs) I'll admit that many of the tips this book presented, I was already doing: Saving +10% of my income, pay yourself first, and low cost investments. The book is sarcastic and funny (the chapter on weddings is hilarious) and excellent advice. It was motivating to see clear cut benefits and rationalizations for the automated budgets and how you can still have fun with your money. For those 35+ with 10,000 or more in credit card debit, a mortgage, kids, and no retirement savings, this book won't help you, and Dave Ramsey won't save you either. You're probably screwed.
