| The Soul of Tone: Celebrating 60 Years of Fender Amps (Book & CD) |
|
Product Details From the same "dream team" that created The Fender Stratocaster Chronicles (Vintage Guitar magazine's 2004 Book of the Year) comes this new publication covering the other side of Fender's legacy, the instrument amplifier. Revered as much as one's guitar, the Fender amplifier gets its due in this full-color, richly illustrated book. Features over 400 images, including legendary guitarists such as Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Neil Young, Pete Townshend, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Robbie Robertson and Dick Dale, and two CDs featuring over 100 tracks that make terms and topics come alive.
Product Reviews (4 stars) - Whew, I finally finished it! Well I've had this book for 3 1/2 months and I finally finished it this morning. There sure is a lot of stuff in there. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as The Stratocaster Chronicles but it was still a great read. On the negative side, the chapter on electronics was a bit painful. As a 30-year electrical engineer, reading the amateurish attempts at explaining electronics made me cringe. I think the author should have gotten someone else to write that chapter. Towards the end there is a discussion of "true point-to-point" vs. eyelet board construction. What's conspicuously missing there is a comparison to PC board construction, which tends to be a very controversial topic. Also missing was any mention of the Amp Can, other than a photo.
If anything, I came away with a bit more of an appreciation for the non-vintage-style amps. Not that I would ever buy one, LOL.
(3 stars) - SWEET BOOK - BUT ALL EDGES DAMAGED! This is a great book with pics of every Fender amp you can imagine.
So much the worse that I recieved it with all edges damaged.
Too bad!
(5 stars) - The Soul of Tone Rocks! This book will inspire you to seek out actual examples of each of these incredible amps and learn more about them. Great book for anyone interested in the history of this great company and especially the wonderful tone shaping products it produced. And now the downside...trying to find and afford a tweed champ and tweed deluxe!!!!
(2 stars) - robert's view The "Sole of Tone" books both arrived damaged having slid around in the box. They were returned and replaced.
The replacement books were even more scuffed and were returned.
(5 stars) - A definite must for Guitar Lovers I purchased this as an addition to the Strat Chronicles. I have already several books on Guitar Amps and tube amps in particular, as well as several books focusing on Fender. This is such a great book historically, it offers such a breadth of information and can offer long-long hours or reading and viewing enjoyment. Not to forget the excellent CDs with great music from all the beloved tube beasts. If you have the Strat Chronicles complete the set. If you dont, buy them both!
