I have seen this Movie and it is incredible~ I am waiting for the sequel to come out now.
I seen the hardcover books and HAD to buy them for my Granddaughter's.
I would Highly Recommend~!!
 (1 stars) - 'Narnia' Meets 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'.. And Not In A Good Way.
This movie is a thinly veiled allegory, emphasis on the word "thinly." After about 15 minutes, I couldn't even pay attention to the plot because I was just trying to spot the political and theological messages. Not that I was missing much. The plot is very boring and predictable. And it looks like the producer was trying (desperately) to recreate other popular children-type movies (or books, when it was written).

I agree with the reviewer about open-mindedness and would suggest that many of Pullman's critics have not even read his books. His writing style, characterisation, and simple story telling are extraordinary and I yearn for some kind of follow-up beyond Lyra's Oxford - enjoyable tit-bit though that was. IT IS A STORY and yes it does highlight many of the horrifying extremes of organised religion, particularly Roman Catholicism - but does the truth hurt?
Personally I was rather disappointed with the film, for although the casting and acting were superb, the changes to the script were simply too swingeing. I loved the books and the excellent audio book version read by the author (not the bbc debacle), having read or listened to them 5 or 6 times. They are my comfort food when I don't know what to consume next.
The Northern Lights (or The Golden Compass) stands proudly alongside other greats from Oxford - Narnia, Lord of the Rings. Personally I even rate the books above my otherwise favourite science fiction - Donaldson's Covenant series.
Pullman does not seek to destroy God, nor promote evil above good. He seeks to tell a good story - and he does so, very well.
(5 stars) - Love to knit? Get this book.
I have not seen the movie but I knit and am geeky enough to make my daughter a Princess Leia buns hat. From the previews, I saw a lot of great knitwear for this film: Lyra's leggings, vest, coat and hat to name a few. This book has great high quality photos from different angles that let you better see the costuming. A great source for re-creating the knit items for yourself or others.

To "Child Advocate"-I personally would like my child to have an open mind and be able to enjoy the things she likes, not what people tell her to enjoy. Keep your closed minded opinions to youself with the rest of the sheep you are part of.
